Looking Back – How BeautyFrosting Was Born

When I started this little adventure called BeautyFrosting 2 years ago, I had no idea what I was doing. I had never written a blog. Actually, I had never even really read a blog! I mean they seemed like such a fad and, um, who had the time?
How BeautyFrosting came to be.
Then one day I found myself in Dallas sitting at our fave family spot, Mi Cocina, pondering the possibility of moving home from LA to Dallas. I was at the lowest point of my life having ended a 7-year relationship and having left my job that I’d had for years with Barbra Streisand as her personal shopper. I was down, depressed and my life wasn’t looking so beautiful.
I was searching for an answer and I found it while talking to my mom and one of my oldest, best friends – Kristin Merritt Liles. We were talking about beauty, baking and how much I love connecting with people and came up with the crazy idea of starting a place of positivity and light filled with all of the people and things I love so much. From that little, crazy nugget of an idea, BeautyFrosting was born.
Looking back, I realize that this one little leap of faith gave birth to so much. In the months following, I hit the ground running. I researched blogs that had similar aesthetics to my own, learned about the best ways to start a blog and would spend hours on Pinterest getting very clear about what exactly I wanted BeautyFrosting to be about.

Introduce yourself to people, be kind and be clear about what you want.
Knowing what I know now, I realize that folks must have thought that I had some major cajones – or maybe they just thought I was naive. I was told repeatedly by brands and other bloggers that I was doing it all wrong – backwards even. I was building the brand and consulting the PR before the blog had even been written or made its online debut. But I was doing it my way and it just made sense to me. After all, why would anyone (brand, person or otherwise) want to work with me if they didn’t even know who I was? Yep, that’s where my southern sensibility comes in. Whether it seemed smart or not, pr agencies and brands that I still work with have told me since that they worked me simply because I seemed charming and honest. So there ya go, folks – charm and honesty are the way to go!
Work with the talented people you already have around you.
Rather than be yet another blog to hit the already-saturated market, I decided to spend 4 months sending emails and making phone calls to hundreds of pr agencies and brands. I decided to pool my brain trust of dear, talented and creative friends to create a blog on a budget that was literally less than $200.
I created a logo and branding template – that would shape the entire blog and brand – thanks to my talented best friend and former roommate, Vanessa York of Shindig Shoppe. After all, who could understand my aesthetic better than my best friend who had lived with me for 2 years? I asked my talented photographer friend, Amy Opoka, if she would take my profile photos for the site and she did an amazing job of executing my vision on a shoestring budget.
This early experience taught me how crucial it is to collaborate with the talents of those you know best. I learned to always ask because the worst that could happen is that they say no. By the way, no one ever said no.

Celebrate every milestone in life.
Ask my mom and she’ll tell you – I love celebrating and I love me a party. Even as a child, I would try to find reasons to celebrate every occasion. My Barbies were getting married? Let’s throw a wedding! I got an A on a test? Let’s have a tea party! I made the cheerleading squad? Let’s have a tex-mex party! So in true Dawn-fashion, I decided to throw a Cupcakes and Cocktails debut party here at my house to celebrate the debut of the blog before anyone had even seen it. Besides being a precious affair, we brought out the laptop and let friends and former coworkers get a sneak peek at what BeautyFrosting would be. I really think a lot of things got rolling because of the choice to celebrate this little milestone. And celebrating milestones is a great way to remember the gratitude every step along the way.

Celebrate the milestones - and little victories - along the way - Photo by Drunken Pixel

Most important lesson learned on this journey? Don’t be afraid to be a fool.
Was I fearful of starting a brand new chapter of my life? Hell, yes. But you get past the fear, accept that you may indeed be a fool and get past yourself. I asked pr companies to send samples before I even knew what that meant. I asked friends to devote hours of their time and because I believed in this so much, they believed in it and wanted to be part of it, as well. And I realized that it was more important to appear confident than it was to have 1 million readers. I have never been more proud of anything…and that’s coming from someone who was never raised to be proud. This blog has literally changed my life and I am so much better because of it.
Most Importantly…Thank YOU.
I know that I am nothing without all of you guys – my readers and social media followers – finding interest in what I write about, take pictures of and who I am. So, I want to thank each and every one of you who read this every day, like my pictures on Instagram and Facebook and tweet at me. (By the way, 2 years ago, I had no idea about what any of that was – that’s how much things can change in 2 years.) I have a feeling that the next 2 years will bring even more exciting change and I hope that you will be there for my journey every step of the way. You have made my hearts so full.

High-Low 2/3/14: Honest Turns 2 & The Bad Ones

HIGH: Honest Turns 2

Celebrating The Honest Company's 2nd birthday with one of my besties, Lindsey

I’m not talking about a kiddo’s birthday party here although this celebration was all about the kids! I was honored to attend The Honest Company‘s 2nd birthday party this past Thursday at their headquarters in Santa Monica. With party planning & whimsical details from Details Details, delicious catering, yummy wine and sparkling wine from my favorite, One Hope Wine and a most-delicious cake by Cakes by Rumy, the fĂŞte was just the sweetest high of my week.

Jessica Alba with The Honest Company's 2nd birthday cake by Cakes by Rumy

Partners – Golden Globe-nominated actress and mom, Jessica Alba and former CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World & father, Christopher Gavigan – formed The Honest Company to, well, keep things honest. These dreamers-turned-doers turned their desire as consumers for a brand based on integrity into an integrity-based brand for all consumers. They say it best themselves, “We tried to think of all the qualities we would want in a dream brand – savvy style, sustainability, and extraordinary service & convenience all wrapped in a passion for social goodness, tied with a bow of integrity and sprinkled with a little cheeky fun.” That’s exactly what they have created in The Honest Company.

Champagne & cake to celebrate a magical company!

At the party, I was delighted to be treated to a mini shopping spree with a chance to try a wide range of The Honest Company‘s products. I picked up a good cross-section of their products and I can’t wait to try! In fact, I was so excited about the organic, vegan, cruelty-free bubble bath picked up that I had to take a bath with it that very night!

Goodies from my mini shopping spree at the Honest Turns 2 party!

By visiting The Honest Company‘s headquarters, getting to see the founders with their families and getting to take part in this celebration, I realized just how magical this company and its founders and family of employees are. They create good products, do good for others and are just good people. How could I not support a company like this 100%. Happy Birthday, Honest! I’m happy to know – and celebrate – you!

LOW: The Bad Ones

Low: The Bad Ones

There must have been something in the water last week because many of my extended chats with friends consisted of us being challenged by bad boys, bad friends, bad jobs, bad situations. So when I attended an Obagi brunch at Soho House last Thursday and they asked all of us to share what sin we’ve committed that we wouldn’t commit again and step into the photo booth with this admission of guilt, I realized I had to state the obvious. The sin? Bad boys. The promise? No more bad boys.

Now, hold your judgment. I have never been one of those girls who liked bad boys. I avoided the bad boys like the plague. For the most part, I have always liked the good guys. You know the ones – the ones who behave as men should. So what exactly do I mean by that? Oh, the men who are thoughtful, kind, smart, creative, considerate, that sort of thing. The kind that opens doors, keeps plans, makes you feel special and considers how their actions would make you feel. But after dating a seemingly bad boy once in my life and commiserating with girlfriends about these bad, bad boys and their actions or lack thereof, I had to ask myself and my friends this question. “Why do we pick them? Or do they pick us?”

It made me recall that quote from that glorious book/film, The Perks of Being A Wallflower: “We accept the love we think we deserve.” So does that make my girlfriends and I feel better or worse? Are we picking bad boys, bad friends, bad jobs, bad situations because we actually think that we deserve it? Gosh, I hope not. My friends are too beautiful – on the inside and out – to sell themselves so short.

Oh wait. And so am I.

I love it when a lesson plays a trick on you like that.

BF

High-Low 1/27/14: Sweeter Than A Cupcake & Sitting With Sadness (thanks, Louis C.K.!)

Here’s my High-Low this week. It was a week filled with sweetness, gratitude, love and light and a little bit of sadness. I just consider myself lucky that I get to feel the entire range of emotions. I’m realizing that there are many people who either physically can’t feel these emotions or have blocked themselves to where they’re devoid of feeling emotions on such a scale. So while that means that I’ll have my share of ups and downs over the years, it also means that I’ll be able to continue to share my High-Lows with you all. Lucky ducks…

HIGH: SWEETER THAN A CUPCAKE

HIGH: SWEETER THAN A CUPCAKE - "I Dream To…" Mentor Day with Step Up Women's Network at the Dermalogica headquarters

This past Saturday morning, I showed up at the Dermalogica headquarters in Carson, California to participate in Step Up Women’s Network “I Dream To…” Mentor Day. I am a visionary member of Step Up Women’s Network and am a big fan because their sole mission is to help inspire girls from under-resourced communities to live up to their full potential. They have done this so effectively that 100% of Step Up graduates over the past 4 years have been accepted to and currently attend college.

I had no idea what to expect and to be honest, I was a little nervous. But after meeting my mentee, “S.”, all of my nervousness went away. We were very different and yet we had qualities at our cores in common which bonded us.

My goal going into the day was to encourage, inspire and motivate her. So imagine my surprise, after spending the day together when I was the one tearing up as I read her letter of gratitude to me and realizing how much she had taught me.

I learned more from this 15-year-old in one day than I have learned from most people in the past month. And by sharing with her some of my successes, struggles and strategies, I actually learned lessons that I didn’t even know I needed to learn.

I am so thankful to have met S. and to have been able to share this day together. My hope is that she took as much away from the day with me as I took from my time spent with her.

LOW: SITTING WITH SADNESS

BeautyFrosting quotes, BeautyFrosting

LOW: SITTING WITH SADNESS (Thanks, Louis C.K.!!)

This past week – like so many other weeks we have in life – I had a bump in the road. I felt sad, disappointed, confused and totally out of my comfort zone. As the extrovert that I am, my initial instinct was to pick up the phone and call a close friend. Usually, that’s what I do. I call my Mom or call or hang out with one of my best friends and share my woes with anyone that I trust. I tell them what’s going on so they can help me work through it and by the end of the call or visit, I get over it and feel better…somewhat.

But this time was different. As I was picking up the phone, I remembered that chat that Louis C.K. had on Conan about cell phones, sadness and basically how it all ties back into our fear of sadness and our fear of being alone. He told a story about getting really sad in his car while listening to Bruce Springsteen’s “Jungleland” (best song ever!!) and how his first instinct was to text like 50 people. But instead of doing that, he took contrary action and just let the sadness hit him like a truck and pulled over and bawled his eyes out. He said that afterwards, he actually felt better because it was like there were antibodies of happiness that came along to counter the extreme sadness.

So, I tried it. I sat in the sadness and let it take me over. I cried like a baby on my bed. I let myself feel out of control. And, well, it worked. I’m not saying that it made me feel all better but it certainly helped me get a little bit more comfortable in my own skin that day. And I truly feel blessed that I get to have those sad moments because they make the happy ones that much sweeter.

BF Asks: What was your High-Low this week?

*So what exactly is a High-Low, you ask? High-Low is the BEST & WORST part of your day, week, month, etc. I started this tradition with friends & family after I discovered it through a movie decades ago. Not only is it useful for reflection sake but it is also an excellent way to communicate with your spouse, kids or friends over the dinner table. By introducing this tradition to folks, parents have told me that their kids have opened up more and friends have told me that their spouses have become more communicative. Try it for yourself and let me know what your experience is!

My Current Crush: Tassel Garlands by Studio Mucci

Kickin' my heels up with My Current Crush…Studio Mucci

Once upon a time, a girl stumbled upon a picture on Instagram and fell in love. In fact, it was love at first sight! And, yep, you guessed it…the girl was me.

I'm in love!!! With whom, you ask? Studio Mucci, of course!

So whose picture made me fall so head-over-heels in love that I contacted the instagram account owner asap?

Studio Mucci. Yep, that’s the name of my current crush. I heart her.

And what enchanted me about Studio Mucci? Um, can you say everything? Studio Mucci – and its delightful designer & owner, Amina – add a dash of whimsy to any fĂŞte or home with comely custom paper decor crafted out of high quality tissue paper.

Custom tassel garland by Studio Mucci (beginning at $35/garland)

Whether it’s for a birthday party, wedding, kid’s party or just to add a little whimsical elegance to your home, Studio Mucci steps up the color and coquettish factor with a side dish of wow and wonder.

And they’re the best at getting you what you want when you need it thanks to their various, more-than-accommodating shipping options.

I ordered Studio Mucci tassel garlands (beginning at $35/garland) for my boudoir shoot and they MADE our set.

Studio Mucci dazzled our dressing area on set...

Lucky for me, the set just happened to be my home so they are still hanging proudly where I can see them – and smile – every day.
And this isn’t the last collaboration between Studio Mucci and us here at BeautyFrosting. Next up? Holiday tassel garlands for the holidays and for my big birthday shindig…which is right around the corner.
Yep, this is just the beginning of a beautiful romance.

The beginning of a beautiful romance between BF & Studio Mucci

HIGH-LOW 10/13/13: Hallmark Home & Family happiness…and a mistake of misjudgment

This week was the very definition of a High-Low. It was one of my favorite, most-fulfilling, most epic weeks ever with a little low that could have disrupted it. But you know what? It didn’t. I wouldn’t let it. Not when I’ve worked so hard and not when my heart is so big.

So what was the high? Well, there were so many, I don’t even know where to start  - between fun time with friends like Jennifer Chan, Lindsey Vaerst, Amy Opoka and Aphrodite Camello and getting to do my weekly Beauty Beat segment on The Moll Anderson Show on I Heart Radio, the week was filled with happiness, friends and daily delights. But if I have to pick one…

HIGH: Home & Family on Hallmark

My high would have to be getting to be a guest on Home & Family on The Hallmark channel.

Being a guest on Home & Family on The Hallmark Channel was the HIGH of my week!

I was invited to be their beauty expert for Makeover Monday where we took Celia – a Home & Family set accountant, mother of 4 boys and an amazing woman who went back to finish college 3 years ago – and helped her discover her beautiful best.

With help from my fellow glam squad members -hairstylist Robby LaRiviere and stylist, Laurie Graham - Celia went from dependable set accountant to sexy birthday girl ready for a night out on the town.

Celia's Glam Squad on Home & Family on Hallmark (from L to R): beauty expert Dawn McCoy of BeautyFrosting, hairstylist Robbie LaRiviere and stylist Laurie Graham

Not used to being the center of attention, Celia enjoyed the primping but I think she realized that being behind the camera is much more relaxing.

As you can see from my face here, Robby ALWAYS has me in stitches!!

As for me? Oh, I loved being on camera. I’m a cheeseball like that.

Robby & I feeling verrrry comfortable on the set of Hallmark Home & Family - the warmest set I've ever been a part of!

But you know what I loved even more? Getting to know Celia and being a part of a team that hopefully helped her discover that her outer beauty is just as beautiful as her inner beauty.

And I can’t say enough about the kindness of the Home & Family family and crew. The set was one of the warmest I have ever been a part of and the hosts Cristina Ferrare and Mark Steines, guests and crew were so kind and generous that my heart just about melted. Thank you for having me, Home & Family family! I can’t wait to come back again!

And, you KNOW I had to take some baked goodness! So my family recipe of “More-More Pumpkin Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting” went right along with me. There wasn’t one left by the end of the day!

A sweet start to shoot day with my homemade "More-More Pumpkin Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting" - here with producer extraordinaire, Amy Webber and stylist Laurie Graham

So you wanna see the makeover? Well, you’ll have to watch Home & Family on Hallmark today at 10 am PST/EST & 9 am CST!!

LOW: A Mistake of Misjudgment

Amen, brother. "The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing." John Powell

So what was the low?

I made a big, big mistake. The kind of mistake you’re not supposed to make as an adult. See, my whole life I’ve really prided myself on my instincts when it comes to judging people. I can tell a bad guy a mile away and I steer clear of ‘em like nobody’s business. But it’s the ones who aren’t bad who are maybe just troubled and confused that can sometimes lead us astray. But after years of being spot on, well, I misjudged. Ugh. So while it’s been a very up & down week, all I can do is learn from this. Forgive myself and move forward.

And through this mistake, I learned such a big life lesson that I actually said this out loud in my bedroom before bed the other night: “Thank you for such a powerful and LOUD life lesson. I hear you. And I have learned.” Does that make me a dork? Oh, ABSOLUTELY. But it also makes me someone who learns from my mistakes, doesn’t make them again and moves on quite nicely.

***Special note: Why March 12th? I chose to debut BeautyFrosting last year on what would have been my beloved Nanny, Clara Margaret Hayes’s, 99th birthday. Every year that I celebrate a birthday, I am celebrating her and all of the lovely, ladylike things she stood for and taught my mom, my aunt, my cousins and me!

I miss you every day, Nanny…

I’M LOVING…Moll Anderson’s Seductive Tables for Two

I’M LOVING… Seductive Tables For Two by Moll Anderson ($19.95)

I’ll warn you now. This is a love letter of a sort to Gracie Award-winning lifestyle & romance guru, Moll Anderson.

You may have seen her on The Doctors this past Thursday discussing how to brighten your home, brighten your mood and rev up your romantic life. But my Moll mania goes back a few years.

I originally found Moll while I was living in Nashville for 4 years. I was working at Woo Skincare & Cosmetics and every month would look forward to lobster mac & cheese for lunch while I would pore over Moll’s fabulous column in Nashville Lifestyles. Besides gaining a little weight with that indulgent lunch, I also gained some lifelong tips that I’ve never forgotten!

As you all may have gathered by now, I love hosting parties! So when I recently found this beautiful new book, through a fellow Moll fan & friend in Nashville, it quickly became my entertaining bible.

Why have I become such a Moll devotee? Moll delights in the decadent details and encourages her readers to work with what they’ve got – regardless of budget or time – to create magical moments. She even makes a coffee table an exotic escape! Whether you’re financially strapped or free to spend, Moll offers some clever suggestions about how to make the most of where you live and what you have, right now.

Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or married, you will be inspired by the tantalizing tablescapes, recipe rescues, terrific tips, and seductive suggestions.

While I’m a single gal at the moment, I have found her seductive taste, tips & tricks to be utterly lifesaving! And for those of you who are coupled out there, I love how Moll shows you how to make the most mundane Monday turn into a most romantic rendezvous.

From cover to cover, this book is filled with seductive tips!

From cover to cover, this book is filled with seductive tips!

Some of her top tips?

  • Creating a Decadent Details Guide, to always have on hand, with all of your favorite dishes, platters, table settings, recipes and more. It makes parties pretty in a pinch!
  • Keeping surprisingly fabulous, frozen croissants from Williams Sonoma in the fridge for impromptu breakfasts in bed
  • Her seductive recipes in the back with naughty & nice names!
  • Her Everyday to Gourmet section with some excellent “cheats” on how to take grocery store staples or takeout items and make them irresistibly delicious in no time!
  •  Her formal & casual table setting guides with where to put what when
  • Her super-helpful Stemware guide that shows you what glass is for what!
  • And much, much more…
Great for the graduate or a must-have for the soon-to-be-married, I can’t say enough good things about this go-to guide! I have gifted it thrice now and the recipients have just raved. Thanks for putting this into the world, Moll! You are my entertaining, lifestyle & romance fairy godmother!

BeautyFrosting Exposed: Everything you never wanted to know about me…

Hey, hey! What’s that you say? You want to know a little bit more about yours truly. Well, then head on over to my favorite new blog, Nami M. Scott: Medium Enthusiast.

You’ll learn everything you either always or never wanted to know about me!

Nami has been featured A FEW times as a BeautyFrosting Whatcha’ Wearin’ Wednesday girl! I was so moved, and inspired by, Nami’s questions and I hope you’ll find little nuggets of inspiration from a few of my answers. We cover beauty, cupcakes, living in LA, blogging, favorite quotes, advice, me as a kid, philosophy, word association and more.

Nami also happens to be one of my dearest friends. And, when you read her blog, you’ll realize why!

Here’s a little slice of Nami’s Intro:

Today’s LAdy is my dear friend, Dawn McCoy. Not only a beauty blogger (go check out Beauty Frosting for more of delightful Dawn), she’s a voiceover actress, baker, singer, songwriter, writer, and all-around great person to know. Over the past 6 months I’ve come to believe that there is very little this woman can’t accomplish. It’s because of Dawn that I was finally able to crawl out of my cave and try blogging again. So, you can thank her for all this Internet rambling from yours truly!

And now, ladies & gentleman, I present LAdies: Interview #1 with Dawn McCoy (a.k.a Beauty Frosting!) – an interview I did while she was eating an awesome soup (that she obviously made herself.)

High-Low 1

I have a tradition that I love and I want to share it with you, my BeautyFrosting readers:

High-Low

A few years ago, I began playing this “game” with my ex-boyfriend, with my friends and their kiddos. It’s such a fun and effortless way to spark conversation at the dinner table or at the end of a long day.

So, here we go. The commencement of BeautyFrosting’s High-Low. I’d love to hear your HighLows, as well. So send ‘em on!

Here are my HIGHS this week:

Jenny & Jon’s Wedding  - What’s not to love about a Garden Wedding? One of my best friends from high school, Jenny, married one of our classmates, Jon, sixteen years after our graduation. They had reconnected 2 years ago and have been an inseparable duo ever since.
