HIGH-LOW 10/13/13: Hallmark Home & Family happiness…and a mistake of misjudgment

This week was the very definition of a High-Low. It was one of my favorite, most-fulfilling, most epic weeks ever with a little low that could have disrupted it. But you know what? It didn’t. I wouldn’t let it. Not when I’ve worked so hard and not when my heart is so big.

So what was the high? Well, there were so many, I don’t even know where to start  - between fun time with friends like Jennifer Chan, Lindsey Vaerst, Amy Opoka and Aphrodite Camello and getting to do my weekly Beauty Beat segment on The Moll Anderson Show on I Heart Radio, the week was filled with happiness, friends and daily delights. But if I have to pick one…

HIGH: Home & Family on Hallmark

My high would have to be getting to be a guest on Home & Family on The Hallmark channel.

Being a guest on Home & Family on The Hallmark Channel was the HIGH of my week!

I was invited to be their beauty expert for Makeover Monday where we took Celia – a Home & Family set accountant, mother of 4 boys and an amazing woman who went back to finish college 3 years ago – and helped her discover her beautiful best.

With help from my fellow glam squad members -hairstylist Robby LaRiviere and stylist, Laurie Graham - Celia went from dependable set accountant to sexy birthday girl ready for a night out on the town.

Not used to being the center of attention, Celia enjoyed the primping but I think she realized that being behind the camera is much more relaxing.

As you can see from my face here, Robby ALWAYS has me in stitches!!

As for me? Oh, I loved being on camera. I’m a cheeseball like that.

Robby & I feeling verrrry comfortable on the set of Hallmark Home & Family - the warmest set I've ever been a part of!

But you know what I loved even more? Getting to know Celia and being a part of a team that hopefully helped her discover that her outer beauty is just as beautiful as her inner beauty.

And I can’t say enough about the kindness of the Home & Family family and crew. The set was one of the warmest I have ever been a part of and the hosts Cristina Ferrare and Mark Steines, guests and crew were so kind and generous that my heart just about melted. Thank you for having me, Home & Family family! I can’t wait to come back again!

And, you KNOW I had to take some baked goodness! So my family recipe of “More-More Pumpkin Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting” went right along with me. There wasn’t one left by the end of the day!

So you wanna see the makeover? Well, you’ll have to watch Home & Family on Hallmark today at 10 am PST/EST & 9 am CST!!

LOW: A Mistake of Misjudgment

Amen, brother. "The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing." John Powell

So what was the low?

I made a big, big mistake. The kind of mistake you’re not supposed to make as an adult. See, my whole life I’ve really prided myself on my instincts when it comes to judging people. I can tell a bad guy a mile away and I steer clear of ‘em like nobody’s business. But it’s the ones who aren’t bad who are maybe just troubled and confused that can sometimes lead us astray. But after years of being spot on, well, I misjudged. Ugh. So while it’s been a very up & down week, all I can do is learn from this. Forgive myself and move forward.

And through this mistake, I learned such a big life lesson that I actually said this out loud in my bedroom before bed the other night: “Thank you for such a powerful and LOUD life lesson. I hear you. And I have learned.” Does that make me a dork? Oh, ABSOLUTELY. But it also makes me someone who learns from my mistakes, doesn’t make them again and moves on quite nicely.

BF Asks: What was your High-Low this week?

*So what exactly is a High-Low, you ask? High-Low is the BEST & WORST part of your day, week, month, etc. I started this tradition with friends & family after I discovered it through a movie decades ago. Not only is it useful for reflection sake but it is also an excellent way to communicate with your spouse, kids or friends over the dinner table. By introducing this tradition to folks, parents have told me that their kids have opened up more and friends have told me that their spouses have become more communicative. Try it for yourself and let me know what your experience is!

Whatcha’ Wearin’ Wednesday: Well in LA’s Erin M.?

I am a big fan of Erin M’s wellness blog, Well in L.A.. Her blog is a mecca for those who are healthy hotties in L.A. and those of us, like me, are trying to get there every day.

So I was thrilled when I ran into her recently at Fashion’s Night Out on Robertson. We had a ball – giggling, gushing and guzzling a little champ – as we bloggers tend to do. And I got the scoop on her goooooorgeous look! Here is our WWW girl – Erin M.

The gorgeous Erin Michelle of Well in LA & her ButterLONDON lips

BF: Oh my gosh, Erin! Your lips are like a video vixen in 1988. What product are you wearing? Tell me everything. And fast so I can go get it myself!

EM: I have a secret place I love to shop in Manhattan Beach! (hint: my signature scent, picturedhere, is also the name of the store!) The last time I was in the store the gals introduced me to a new product from butterLONDON. This Brit line is best known for their rich, earth-friendly nail lacquers and polishes. Well, ladies, get ready to be a little bit LIPPY I am beyond obsessed with their new line of richly-pigmented and ultra-moisturizing lip glosses.

BF: Tell the folks where this Lippy love fest all happened.

EM:  I debuted my LIPPY “Come To Bed Red” at FashionsNightOutonRobertson this year, where I was wearing a “neutral” palette of mixed metals and a dark gray faux fur from Hale Bob. Adding a red lip was the “icing on the cake” for the outfit, so to speak.

BF: I looooooove ButterLONDON Lippy. Love it! Stays on and color stays true through everything you do. Gosh, that sounds like a commercial.

The gorgeous hostesses of Fashion's Night Out on Robertson at Hale Bob

BF: Who are those gorgeous ladies with you in the pic? (I know but I just have to ask for you lovely readers out there)

EM: For the evening I was flanked by my very beautiful FNO co-hostesses, Sharzad Kiadeh of LuxLyfe and Celebrity Stylist LaurieGraham. Not to mention the incredible ladies who came out to party with us like Ms. Beauty Frosting herself, NicoleMyden and Whitney Lader of HoopLA (also featured on the WWW series!). I adore makeup, clothing and all the accessories, but there is nothing that beats being surrounded by fierce, intelligent female friends!

BF: How did you decide on ButterLONDON Lippy gloss when there are sooooo many products we are introduced to as an L.A. blogger?

EM: I loved the rockstar outfit I was wearing and wanted to keep the focal point on the clothes that were being provided for the eventbyHaleBob. But let’s be honest, there’s no need to shy from a little extra “pop” of confidence, even when we’re wearing an amazing outfit. For me it’s something small with a big impact, like my signature scent, a killer manicure, a brightly colored lip or even my favorite lingerie. Girls really do have more fun!

BF: Would you wear this every day? Give us a little taste of your beauty philosophy, pretty please.

EM: I love to wear an outfit or makeup that makes me feel confident every day. I don’t wait for a special occasion or event. Why not make each day a little special? I do follow the rule of only highlighting one thing at a time, whether its an outfit, playing up my eyes or wearing a bright lip. Lips are probably my favorite to play with because its so simple to swipe on a bold color and showcase your confidence with every girl’s ultimate accessory: a big smile.

BF: How does wearing this product affect the rest of your routine? (i.e., “This is a bold lip shade so I like to go simple with the eyes and add a pop of blush on the apples of my cheeks)

EM: I try to behave and only have one piece “pop” instead of doing too much at once. If I’m just wearing my LIPPY red I keep the rest of my makeup simple – tinted moisturizer, a little swipe of ColorTattooEyeshadow (gold and bronze are my picks for blue eyes) and myfavoritemascara – and I’m out the door in under 5 minutes.

BF: Is this a signature shade/product for you? If not, what is – as they say in Steel Magnolias – your “signature color”?

EM: I think it’s fast becoming one! As a blonde with fair skin and blue eyes, red lips are a lot of fun to play with when it comes to makeup. I also love CovergirlsLipPerfection in Flame, which is a more matte lipstick (comparable to MAC but great for girls on a budget!). It offers a rich stain. So much so that when I wear it for a night out and wake the next morning I still have a pretty red shade on my lips, making running errands or going to brunch a little more fun on the weekends!

Thank you so much, Erin for being our beautiful Whatcha’ Wearin’ Wednesday girl today!

xoxo,
BF

BF Asks: Are you adventurous enough to try a bold lip this season? What bold lip are you donning?
