Life’s Not Always Peachy Keen: A Little Social Media Truth Talk

Life’s not always peachy keen…even on days when there are peach muffins for breakfast.

Life's not always peachy keen…even when there are peach muffins for breakfast. Let's get real, folks.

Life’s not always peachy keen…even when there are peach muffins for breakfast. Let’s get real, folks.

Life is made up of lots of little crumbs — some sweet and delicious, and some just too tough to digest.
Yesterday I posted that I was having a tough morning and was baking to deal with it. I was hurting for someone I love, about something that is out of my control. I was overwhelmed with messages of love, concern, care and support from friends and everyone I love. Thank you all.
But that’s not why I posted that.

As a so-called social media influencer I think it’s our responsibility to not treat social media as a Christmas card that just shows us at our best and our happiest. That’s not real, and that’s not life. We all have down days and we all have problems and moments we struggle with. I think it’s important to show what we do to cope with the hard times as honestly as we capture how we celebrate the good times. By being honest with our social media, and showing both the highs and the lows, I hope our friends and followers can see who we truly are, and hopefully know they’re not alone when they experience those darker days.
Hopefully, they’re reminded that lightness always follows the darkness, and they will be okay.

I Don’t Like This Picture…But I LOVE This Moment.

I don’t like this picture I have broken nails, I peeled the polish off my pinkie nail, have a random red mark on my chest and my eyes look asymmetrical.

I don't like this picture, but I LOVE this moment.

I don’t like this picture, but I LOVE this moment.

But I LOVE this moment. You know your best friend Matt Marr knows you as well as he knows himself, when you’re walking out of Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck at Arclight Culver City and in the middle of a story, he gasps, saying “Oh my god. This light is beautiful. Give me your phone,” and starts snapping pictures.

I learn from him every day as my friend, my neighbor, my brother and as a human I aspire to be more like. He really is the best person I know. I love him to bits.

And I’m learning to love myself, because of – not in spite of – my imperfections – a little more every day.

I’d like to think we’re all here to help one another do just that.

Dawn

I’M LOVING…Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturizer Aloe Soothe – Spray & Go!

Vegas.

Fun on the heart, heavy on the wallet, and HELL on the skin.

I had such a ball hosting the red carpet for the North American Hairstylists Awards at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas this past Sunday in the aforementioned Las Vegas.

But my skin? Well, it didn’t have such a ball.

The morning after the big award show, my skin was ashy, dry and just sad looking.

Truth talk.

But, I was slated to wear a breezy short summer romper that day that would show off my legs and arms.
So, what’s a parched girl to do?

Well, lucky for me, I packed my Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturizer Aloe Soothe ($6.49) in my bag and took it with me to the convention center for my brand meetings at Cosmoprof.

Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturizer Aloe Soothe to the rescue in the desert!

I stepped outside and sprayed it on, and I was good to go in under 10 seconds. Best of all, you can hold the bottle any which direction, and with its 360-degree continuous spray technology, you’re covered. It’s the perfect moisturizer for the busy girl like me on the go. I mean, you literally just Spray and Go! Yep. It’s really that easy!

Spray and go! Instant hydration - without the mess - for dry desert days

So, how’s it work? Its unique fast to apply, quick to dry formula heals dry skin in seconds, and all without staining or sticking to your clothes. Plus, it’s good for us senstive-skinned sirens, which isn’t always easy to come by.

The final verdict? With micro-droplets of uber-hydrating Vaseline Jelly to heal dryness, my skin was glowing and soft in seconds, with no grease in sight.

Now, that’s a winning bet.

Dawn Do? Spray on Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturizer Aloe Soothe, right after your nighttime bath on towel-dried skin for deeper absorption. And, during the day, spray on your moisturizer and then  rub in your favorite luminous bronzer for an instant glowing hue.

BF Asks: What are some of your favorite classic beauty products?

BeautyFrosting Beauty Rituals: The Vanity Of It All

Where you'll find me - at some point - every day. Sitting at my antique white vanity, drying my hair, putting on mascara or lipstick, or trying out a new beauty product for consideration for segments and blog posts.

My beauty regimen was born at the tender age of 4 – as the ultimate girly girl – when I was gifted a vanity for Christmas, by Santa.

Is there any wonder I'm who I am today? Here I am, at age 4, being gifted with a box of….vanity!

Me. 4 years old. Sitting at my first vanity. It would not be my last. p.s. Love my mom's reflection in the mirror! I still keep a picture of her on my vanity!

Anywhere I’ve ever lived, I’ve had a dressing table: in my childhood bedroom (a cherry wood vanity), at camp, my high school bedroom (a white wicker vanity), in my college dorm rooms (I would turn boring sinks into elaborate contact-paper-covered dressing tables with my mom’s help), at the Kappa Kappa Gamma house at the University of Texas (where I made my tiny blue and gold bedside table my vanity in a tiny room I shared with 2 other girls – PRIORITIES!) and every home I’ve ever lived in. Some of my favorite memories with friends have taken place sitting at my various vanities.

I love sitting down and really taking a moment to apply my makeup. It's a little slice of luxury every day!

The antique cottage white shabby chic vanity I have now, I’ve had since buying it in Santa Monica at Sutble Tones with my mom in 2000. I replaced the red velvet chair I’d had for 15 years, with a blue velvet chair this year. Such an early (earrrrly!!) ritual I’ve carried with me.

How much of a ritual? Well, ask me to blow dry my hair standing up, and I’m useless.

This is probably the last time I applied makeup while sitting on the carpet.

To me, it’s all about that moment of sitting down, taking some time out from the busy world, looking yourself in the eye, investing some time in yourself, and pampering yourself a bit daily.

Seems like no surprise to anyone, then, that I’ve been named Beauty Collection’s first Celebrity Beauty Curator! But more on that later…

xoxo,

Dawn (BF)

BF Asks: What’s one of your most beloved beauty rituals?

My Skincare Secrets? Why, it’s no secret at all.

My Skincare Secrets? Why, it's no secret at all.

A few nights ago, I received what – only in the crazy world of LA – is considered a great compliment.

While getting my makeup done for The Grammys festivities, I mentioned my age (37) and my makeup artist said, “I don’t mean to be rude, but have you had work done? I thought you were in your late 20s.”

Um, firstly, BLESS YOU. As for the answer?

Nope. No Botox. No filler. No peels. Nothing. Nada.

And then I proceeded to tell her that I never leave my makeup on when I go to sleep, never leave the house or go to sleep without oil or moisturizer on, and have religiously applied Crème de la Mer every night since I was 21 years old.

So, actually, while I’ve had no work “done” per se, I have put A LOT of work into my skin.

My single best skincare tip?

Keep your nighttime skincare regimen next to your bed and your daytime skincare regimen next to your toothbrush – it’s all about convenience and ease.

I also thank my mom for taking me to the Clinique counter at age 10, teaching me the importance of taking care of my skin and buying me the aforementioned La Mer every year for my birthday. So, thanks Mom!! And thanks, Evy, for making my Grammys night! I’d had a bit of a rough week and that made it end sweetly!

Love This Valentine’s Date Night Look As Much as I Love Frosting!

I love frosting. A lot.

Love this look more than frosting!

So, to say, I love this look – created with these products – as much as I love frosting means it’s super delicious.

Two of my faves one cake stand: Makeup & cake! *makeup details below/cakelet ℅ Beverly's Best Bakery

And just in time! It’s the perfect makeup look for your Valentine’s look this year!

Easy bronze, smoky eyes with bronzed, chiseled cheekbones, full & defined brows and frosty baby pink lips.

Easy bronze, smoky eyes, bronzed cheekbones, defined brows and frosty baby pink lips

And did I say how easy it is?

*On the eyes:

1) Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon in Amber Haze ($27) – Apply the crayon from crease to lash line and blend with brush. Then, use the crayon to color in the bottom lash line.

2) Charlotte Tilbury The Dolce Vita Luxury Palette ($52) – Apply the glitter shadow (bottom left) over the Amber Haze pencil.

3) Charlotte Tilbury Rock’N’Kohl Eye Cheat Iconic Liquid Eye Pencil ($27) -Apply in inner corners to brighten the eyes, making them appear wider and brighter! It’s also great to apply the lower waterline when you want to brighten the eye and make your defined lash line look even more defined.

4) L’Oreal Voluminous Miss Manga Volumizing Mascara ($7.99) – stretches those lashes from root to tip to extend and plump. Apply to top and bottom lashes.

*On the brows: 5) L’Oreal Brow Stylist Plumper ($8.99) – Brush it up and across!

*On the cheeks: 6) Jouer Cosmetics Luminizing Liquid Highlighter in Golden Light ($39) – applied on orbital bone and upper cheekbone

7) NYX Cosmetics Baked Blush in Passion ($7) – Apply under cheekbones and on apples of cheeks for a bronzed glow with a bit of peach.

8) On the Lips: Pixi Beauty Tinted Brilliance Balm in Lucent Glow ($14)

All together, you get one sexy, smoldering date-night look!

Mani Monday: Gilded Macaron by Enamel Diction

It’s just another Mani Monday…or is it?
Nope, it looks like a Macaron Monday to me!

Mani Monday: Gilded Macaron by Enamel Diction

This week, Enamel Diction brought the sweetness as they crafted a confection of a mani, that made the macaroons at Bottega Louie I picked up the next day jealous.

Head on over to Enamel Diction for your own gel mani with nail art (one like this runs around $55).
