High-Low 2/3/14: Honest Turns 2 & The Bad Ones

HIGH: Honest Turns 2

Celebrating The Honest Company's 2nd birthday with one of my besties, Lindsey

I’m not talking about a kiddo’s birthday party here although this celebration was all about the kids! I was honored to attend The Honest Company‘s 2nd birthday party this past Thursday at their headquarters in Santa Monica. With party planning & whimsical details from Details Details, delicious catering, yummy wine and sparkling wine from my favorite, One Hope Wine and a most-delicious cake by Cakes by Rumy, the fête was just the sweetest high of my week.

Jessica Alba with The Honest Company's 2nd birthday cake by Cakes by Rumy

Partners – Golden Globe-nominated actress and mom, Jessica Alba and former CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World & father, Christopher Gavigan – formed The Honest Company to, well, keep things honest. These dreamers-turned-doers turned their desire as consumers for a brand based on integrity into an integrity-based brand for all consumers. They say it best themselves, “We tried to think of all the qualities we would want in a dream brand – savvy style, sustainability, and extraordinary service & convenience all wrapped in a passion for social goodness, tied with a bow of integrity and sprinkled with a little cheeky fun.” That’s exactly what they have created in The Honest Company.

Champagne & cake to celebrate a magical company!

At the party, I was delighted to be treated to a mini shopping spree with a chance to try a wide range of The Honest Company‘s products. I picked up a good cross-section of their products and I can’t wait to try! In fact, I was so excited about the organic, vegan, cruelty-free bubble bath picked up that I had to take a bath with it that very night!

Goodies from my mini shopping spree at the Honest Turns 2 party!

By visiting The Honest Company‘s headquarters, getting to see the founders with their families and getting to take part in this celebration, I realized just how magical this company and its founders and family of employees are. They create good products, do good for others and are just good people. How could I not support a company like this 100%. Happy Birthday, Honest! I’m happy to know – and celebrate – you!

LOW: The Bad Ones

Low: The Bad Ones

There must have been something in the water last week because many of my extended chats with friends consisted of us being challenged by bad boys, bad friends, bad jobs, bad situations. So when I attended an Obagi brunch at Soho House last Thursday and they asked all of us to share what sin we’ve committed that we wouldn’t commit again and step into the photo booth with this admission of guilt, I realized I had to state the obvious. The sin? Bad boys. The promise? No more bad boys.

Now, hold your judgment. I have never been one of those girls who liked bad boys. I avoided the bad boys like the plague. For the most part, I have always liked the good guys. You know the ones – the ones who behave as men should. So what exactly do I mean by that? Oh, the men who are thoughtful, kind, smart, creative, considerate, that sort of thing. The kind that opens doors, keeps plans, makes you feel special and considers how their actions would make you feel. But after dating a seemingly bad boy once in my life and commiserating with girlfriends about these bad, bad boys and their actions or lack thereof, I had to ask myself and my friends this question. “Why do we pick them? Or do they pick us?”

It made me recall that quote from that glorious book/film, The Perks of Being A Wallflower: “We accept the love we think we deserve.” So does that make my girlfriends and I feel better or worse? Are we picking bad boys, bad friends, bad jobs, bad situations because we actually think that we deserve it? Gosh, I hope not. My friends are too beautiful – on the inside and out – to sell themselves so short.

Oh wait. And so am I.

I love it when a lesson plays a trick on you like that.

BF

High-Low 10-21-13: Urban Remedy Daycation & Letting Go of What Does Not Serve Me

HIGH: Urban Remedy Daycation with my fellow bloggers & tastemakers in Malibu

Last Tuesday, I had one of the most amazing days I’ve ever had. And it was all thanks to Urban Remedy and my friend – and fellow blogger – Jamie Stone of Queen Of The Quarter Life Crisis.

Jamie & Urban Remedy invited a host of bloggers and tastemakers to a mecca in Malibu- that was beyond divine – for a “Daycation”.

With my fellow bloggers, Roxy Manning of RedCarpetRoxy, Jamie Stone of Queen of The Quarter Life Crisis, Sydne Summer of SydneStyle and Rachel Dickhute of EverythingHauler

What did our “daycation” consist of?

Well, it started with being picked up at my house at 8:45 am and the ride along the coast – thanks to my driver – was perfection.

8:45 am pickup - courtesy of Urban Remedy - started the day off right!

Champagne-sipping while sitting in a swing chair was next…

Just a swingin'...and a-sippin'....

followed by more swinging…

I couldn't get enough of swinging...it took me right back to my childhood and I felt like I was in NeverNeverLand!

…cohorting with chickens – especially the fuzzy-Yeti-chicken with whom we were all obsessed and…

Sipping some chia with chickens - not your normal LA day...

(my favorite!) sitting in a teepee with my fellow guests, getting to know – and support – one another through an ancient ritual known as “circling”.

Teepee time - I never knew circlng could be filled with healing and self-discovery

We all agreed that the experience profoundly affected us and that we felt forever connected to one another because of this rare, self-celebrating and self-healing day.

With my fellow bloggers & tastemakers in the teepee

It was not your normal blogger event and I could not be more grateful to have been a part of it. So – again – thank you, Urban Remedy & Jamie!

A bonus? The next day, I enjoyed my Urban Remedy juice while baking pumpkin cupcakes. The perfect breakfast to  feed my body after feeding my soul the day before.

Urban Remedy Soothe No. 4 juice - with celery, cucumber, apple, ginger, parsley, lemon & more!

LOW: Letting Go – “Let go of anything that’s with you and not serving you.”

LOW: I am ready to let go of...

While this wasn’t a typical low, it qualifies as a low as it brought some pain before it brought some deeper discovery for me. In our circle in the teepee, we were each asked to write down on a piece of paper something we were ready to let go of. In fact the direction was, “Let go of anything that’s with you and not serving you.”

Yikes. This was a doozy. And for me, up came a lot of insecurity and fear that I needed – I should say, NEED – to let go of. So I wrote down all of the things that  don’t serve me, tore it up into pieces and let it go to literally be burned. Andrea of The Art of Circling – our circling guide – let us know that there was great power with the full moon that would come a few days later. So letting go of this baggage felt blessed in a way. And I feel a little lighter now as a result.  I also promised myself to counter every negative thought I have or say about myself with a positive one. Folks, that one is a bit trickier. But I’m trying. I have been made aware of my weaknesses and I am trying to turn them into strengths every day. It’s really all we can do in this thing called life.

xoxo,

BF

BF Asks: What was your High-Low this week?  And what are you ready to let go of? What’s not serving you?

*So what exactly is a High-Low, you ask? High-Low is the BEST & WORST part of your day, week, month, etc. I started this tradition with friends & family after I discovered it through a movie decades ago. Not only is it useful for reflection sake but it is also an excellent way to communicate with your spouse, kids or friends over the dinner table. By introducing this tradition to folks, parents have told me that their kids have opened up more and friends have told me that their spouses have become more communicative. Try it for yourself and let me know what your experience is!

I’M LOVING… Antonym Ecocert Certified Natural Waterproof Eye Pencil in Noir

If there’s one thing you’ve gotta know about my daily makeup musts, it’s that black liner in the inner rim rules my world. It all goes back to Catherine Zeta Jones and her seductive sex appeal. A few people told me I resembled her and I forever was hooked on lining that inner rim of the eye.

So many eyeliners promise rich, waterproof and smudgeproof power. I try them and 90% of the time, I am left disappointed. But not in this case, my friends. I was introduced to Antonym Ecocert Certified Natural Waterproof Eye Pencil in Noir ($18) at an event a few months ago and just played with it two weekends ago. Well, I fooled around and fell in love.

I'M LOVING... Antonym Ecocert Certified Natural Waterproof Eye Pencil ($18)

Not only is it rich, waterproof and smudgeproof but it can be worn without concern in that oh-so-seductive inner rim of which I spoke earlier.

Antonym Waterproof Eye Pencil was so rich, it didn't even let this stag upstage it...okay, maybe that's taking it a bit far...

I wore it to a friend’s show and it lasted from 8pm until 3 am and it only came off then because it was time for my nightly bath.

Yikes! Close-up shot

I seriously am not only loving this eye pencil but I am IN LOVE with it. And you will be too if you try it! Love, I tell you.

You will want to kiss this eyeliner!! ("dawning" Antonym Ecocert certified natural waterproof eye pencil in Noir)

Aaaaaaand it’s 100% natural, vegan, cruelty-free, free of preservatives and dermatologist tested. So not only does it come on strong and wear long but it is actually good for you – and the environment and animals – as well. No small feat, my friend.

Tempting Tuesday: Bite Beauty Champagne Cuvee Deluxe Lipstick Collection

Usually when you get a lipstick collection like this, you love one and the rest are “meh”. “Meh” maning I could take ’em or leave ’em.
Well, I am happy to report that this is NOT the case with Bite Beauty Champagne Cuvee Deluxe Lipstick Collection ($72).

This comely collection is as pretty to look at as a colorful bowl of candy…hence the adorable staging.

Bite Beauty Champagne Cuvee Deluxe Lipstick Collection ($72)

Besides being candy-colored comely, this beautiful collection is also derived from French champagne grapes, freshwater Tahitian Black Pearl and Japanese silk powder. And the uber-special antioxidant benefits and resveratrol from the grapes tackle fine lines to store and protect lips. In fact, they’re so special, that they are limited to an exclusive batch of 1200 lipsticks per shade!

Longwearing, intense color coupled with creamy, antioxidant-filled moisture leads to a fabulous, foolproof, featherweight finish.

Each one of these 4 colors made me feel beautiful and, well, like a different person. I felt like I was playing a beautiful character with each lip color I put on for the day. I started with the boldest hue – Cuvee Rose (rose pink).

And I wore it… A LOT. To three events, one party and around the house more than I’d care to admit.

Bite Beauty Cuvee Rose rosied up my world!

Next up? The Cuvee Coral (vibrant coral). A gorgeous punchy coral with a kick – a little spice, if you will. I am loving it so much right now that I wore it all day today and then used it to express my Twitter love on the mirror! Thanks again, y’all! 11,000 followers? I’m overwhelmed and humbled.

Celebrating with Bite Beauty Cuvee Coral

And I haven’t played the other ones as much as the top two but after trying them on today for this post, I will be “dawning” the heck out of ’em with a smoky eye!

Foodie Friday: Pedalers Fork in Calabasas

Pedalers Fork in Calabasas

Dawn's Faves from Pedalers Fork

Dear Pedalers Fork Team,

BeautyFrosting editor, Dawn McCoy, and I had the delicious opportunity to experience a sneak preview of Calabasas’s newest epicurean jewel, Pedalers Fork. Whoever says you can’t have it all hasn’t been to Pedalers Fork! This is destination dining at its best! You’ve created a beautiful oasis for us to gather with friends and escape the hectic day-to-day, without having to pack a bag or board a plane!

A perfect balance of location and design, the stunning interior was inspirational.

Every window strategically placed inviting nature inside to co-mingle with the rustic reclaimed wood accents, and antique light fixtures. The vintage bikes perched in the rafters overhead are a reminder of the inspiration for this sanctuary you’ve created.

Pedalers Fork interior & patio

I was in heaven when I stepped out on the patio. Worthy of the “dream home” sketches I walk around with in my head, it felt like a cool tree house for adults, dining amongst the trees, watching the ducks, and listening to the choir of frogs singing the praises of Pedalers Fork. A truly tranquil feeling that reminded me to breathe, slow down and appreciate the moment. I felt the love that went in to every detail!

Your dream project is a bona fide triple threat. You truly have something for everyone. A coffee shop that brews fresh-roasted 10 Speed Coffee from Oregon for the early risers, a cycling boutique catering to the active enthusiasts, and a beautiful restaurant with a menu focused toward a health conscious lifestyle. You’ve really thought of everything! The use of ingredients from the best organic and sustainable local farms has created standout dishes that feed our souls as well as nourish our bodies, and allowed me to leave the table without feeling guilty. Ok, maybe a LITTLE guilty after devouring both the Berry Cobbler AND the delicious Flourless Chocolate Cake for dessert, but well worth it! Chef Dan’s extensive menu has a little something for everyone.

Which might explain why I kept calling the dish “my boyfriend” as in “Please leave my boyfriend and I alone in peace.” Yep, it’s that killer.)

Kabocha Squash Lasagna: A cheesy, tomatoey, veggie orgasm of a dish! (that's another quote from Dawn)

Thank you for having the passion to create an environment where we can meet to share a cup of coffee, a cocktail and a meal, but stay to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and friends. Pedalers Fork is inspired by the cycling culture, but I’ll tell everyone the mode of transportation is secondary. Run, walk, cycle or drive. Just get there!

Just get there! if you do, you might be smiling as widely as these bloggers - Dawn McCoy, of BeautyFrosting, and Whitney Lader of hoopLA

With Love and respect,

Foodie Friday: Lyfe Kitchen is loooovely!

Dear LYFE KITCHEN,

Lyfe Kitchen in Culver City

Thank you for opening your doors in Culver City and opening your kitchen and comforts to all of Los Angeles. Your chef, manager and staff were so friendly and concerned with customer care that it felt like you were opening your hearts to us, as well.

LYFE Kitchen stands for Love Your Food Everyday and if I could eat like this every day, I would.  As a gal who likes to eat healthy 80% of the time and allows 20% for those charming “cheaty” foods, I love that at Lyfe Kitchen, I don’t have to choose. While you have menus for the gluten-free/celiac crowd and the vegans among us, you also have a full-service and fully pleasing menu for all the rest of us. Best part? All of the dishes and drinks are on the low-moderate-calorie side at under 600 calories. And it marries the best of both worlds: sustainable practices and natural, healthy, whole foods.

I came in last Monday night with my dear friend – and foodie guru – Whitney of HoopLA. I had no expectations and was at the mercy of Whitney and your fine executive chef, Jeremy Bringardner, which was totally my pleasure.

Some of my favorites on your menu?

Just a few of my favorites from Lyfe Kitchen...

Starters & Salads: The grilled artichoke ($7.99) paired with garlic aioli and the vegan caesar dressing. Let me tell you, honey, that I will be back to buy a pint of that caesar dressing, it is so delicious. And, sir, I’m not even a vegan. Yes, it’s that killer. The chunky guacamole ($5.99) was the best guacamole I’ve had besides my Mama’s with that perfect amount of citrus, acidity and creaminess. Served with gluten-free, house-baked tortilla chips and salsa fresca, I’ll be back soon for a true taste of the border! And the Farmer’s Market salad ($8.99) was simple, tangy and delicious thanks to the blackberries, spiced pecans, goat cheese and balsamic vinaigrette.

Entrees:  Art’s Unfried chicken ($12.99) with roasted brussels sprouts, butternut squash, dried cranberries, cashew cream and dijon vinaigrette was again something that reminded me of something Mama would make. Terrifically tasty with a juicy, mouthwatering texture, it’s sure to please. And you also offered a Gardein “chicken” version, as well.

Desserts: Well, now this was just ridiculous. We were delighted with the vegan and gluten-free ChoColaTe Budino with pomegranate-soaked chia seeds and slivered almonds ($3.99) and the Apple and Quinoa crisp ($3.99). We realized that you really cannot go wrong with either one and I don’t recommend that anyone leaves there without trying at least one of these delicious desserts.

Drinks: I sampled each of their red wines and they were divine!

Setting & Ambiance: This is a perfect spot for everyone. With comfy booths, a bright feel and inspiring quotes on the wall, everyone will feel at home here. Great for couples, kids and singles alike!

Lyfe Kitchen is full of life!

Overall, Lyfe Kitchen converted me into being a believer that low-cal, vegan and gluten-free cooking cannot only be as good as its higher caloric, nutrient-lacking counterparts but that it can actually taste BETTER. Job well done.

xoxo,

Dawn McCoy

In-My-Tub-Tuesday: LAVANILA 2-in-1 Body Wash in Vanilla Grapefruit

Happy In-My-Tub-Tuesday, beauties!
I’m a little bummed because my cold water knob in my bathtub is out and I have just fallen in love with this new body wash from LAVANILA!

You may remember my prior grapefruit gushing over LAVANILA products. I am a big, big, BIG fan of their all-natural, sweet-smelling deodorant and fragrance. And I am happy to report that The Healthy Body Wash 2-in-1 is just as delightfully delicious as all of their other products!

In-My-Tub-Tuesday: LAVANILA The Healthy Body Wash 2-in-1 in Vanilla Grapefruit ($14 for 8 oz.)

This time-maximizing 2-in-1 shower & shave is a crisp cocktail of sparkling pink grapefruit juice with a splash of warm Madagascar vanilla. The result? A body wash so delicious-smelling that you want to want to drink it! But please don’t. This all-natural, vegan & cruelty-free body wash gently cleanses while providing enough moisture and slip for a smooth shave.

Hydrating coconut & rosehip oils partner with soothing aloe & calendula for a lusciously lathering wash that hydrates and quenches skin while preventing irritation and dryness.

Yet again, my senses are satiated and my skin feels soft thanks to the lovely Lavanila!!

Whatcha’ Wearin’ Wednesday: Lovely Lauren C.

Love it when I make a green beauty discovery!
Especially since I’m a little green when it comes to green beauty.

When I attended Fournier PR’s “Be Parisian For A Day” event at the Sunset Marquis Villas back in June, I had no idea how much French fun I was in for!
I was turned on to soooooo many new products and fell in love with so many of them!

Love it when that happens!

One of the lines new to me was Emani.

And the face of Emani was Lauren.

And what a face it was!

Whatcha' Wearin' Wednesday, Lauren?

Our WWW Girl: Lauren

I loved the polished look of her eye makeup so you know I had to ask:

BF: Lauren, Whatcha’ Wearin’?

Lauren: Emani!!

Side view of lovely Lauren C.

Side view of lovely Lauren C.

BF: Would you mind if I feature you as my WWW girl and take a few pics?

Lauren: Go right ahead! But I put it on at 7 am this morning – do I need to retouch?

BF: 7 am!!?? You have got to be kidding. You look beautiful! You don’t need to retouch a thing!

Lauren: No. Seriously. That’s the thing about Emani – it’s amazing. Have you tried it?

BF: No, but I will now. Your makeup looks like you JUST put it on! Please tell me everything you’re wearing so I can get to know this seemingly magical mineral makeup!

Lauren: I can do better than that! I’ll take a pic of my makeup routine and email you the details. Will that work?
BF: Will that work?! Are you kiddin’?! Bless you, darlin’.

I can’t wait to try Emani myself if I can look like her!

As for Emani, this is what I know:

*A professional makeup line that promotes a pretty, healthy complexion. Gotta love that!

*Vegan friendly product – free of the not-so-pretty stuff like Talc, Gluten and Parabens.

*No harsh chemicals, petrochemicals or synthetic fragrances

*Organic,natural pigments

*Lasting mineral makeup that looks polished NOT heavy-handed like some mineral makeup lines

*PETA Certified

*Sustainable, Recycled & Biodegrable Packaging

*Made in the USA

Well, I love ALL of that goodness! And I have a feeling a lot of you will too.

Love it when I make a green beauty discovery!

And, as promised, here is Lauren C’s beauty routine.

Here’s the email from our WWW girl today, the lovely Lauren:

Mailbox Monday: Eco-Emi: Glamour you can feel good about!

Happy Monday morning, beauties!
You ready for a great week?
It’s gonna be a good one!

In honor of Earth Day and all things good and pure, I want to tell you about one of my favorite discoveries I’ve made this year: Eco-Emi beauty box service.

It’s a box bustling with green glamorous goodies delivered directly to your mailbox!

Eco-Emi

I just opened my Eco-Emi March box and was just thrilled to see all the goodness that came in it! Yaya!!

I will be the first one to tell you that I am not the perfect example of eco-friendly living. I am no green queen by any means. But I am learning and I learn something every day about eco-friendly living – whether it be a new way to reuse and recycle, or (MY FAVORITE!!), a new beauty product that is eco-conscious. I’m sure a few of you out there can relate.

Which is why it’s a good thing that I met Christine of Eco-Emi.

She is THE green queen and each month I receive my Eco-Emi beauty box, I’m a little closer to green-queedom, thanks to her mindfully-selected products.

So what is Eco-Emi?

Eco-Emi is a beauty box chock-full of green beauty goodies. What are green beauty goodies? They are natural, organic, green, eco-friendly, cruelty-free, vegan, vegetarian or Fair Trade products that you can feel proud to try and buy.

And For only $15 per month, why wouldn’t you try?
Every month, you get a prettily-packaged, thoughtful selection of beauty goodies, hand-selected by green queen, Christine herself, to try. And believe me – once you try, you WILL want to buy these delicious, glamorously green goodies.

Maybe you’re like how I used to be. I thought that by being green, maybe a little glamour would be missing in these products. I couldn’t be more wrong.
It’s glamour you can feel good about!!

I’ve been an Eco-Emi girl for the past three months and I have been thrilled with the boxes I’ve received!
