The #Dear15Me Challenge

How did you feel at 15-years-old? And what do you wish you could tell yourself at 15 if you could go back now?

#Dear15Me : Helping teens tackle their teenage years with the confidence, grace, wisdom and ease we wish we’d had.

That’s what #Dear15Me is all about. Dawn McCoy (host, creator of BeautyFrosting, and lifestyle and life empowerment expert) has created a movement where we can share our stories and struggles of when we were 15-years-old – and share our hindsight vision – to encourage teens to love and accept themselves, just as they are right now at this very moment.  *Helping teens tackle their teenage years with the confidence, grace, wisdom and ease we wish we’d had.*

So many of us say, “If I had known then, what I know now….”, so why don’t we tell teens while they’re still in it? Our goal is to start a viral movement that helps ease what can be a tough time in a teen’s life. Post a picture of yourself at 15 and your #Dear15Me message, and let teens know how you felt at 15, and what you would say to yourself if you had the chance now. Because you do. You have a chance now to help them get through this challenging time, with confidence, grace and ease. No picture of you at 15? No problem. Just post a pic of you now, holding the sign “Dear 15 Me…”and write your story and what you wish you could tell 15-year-old you in the caption.

Seeing the struggles that we went through then, how we got through them, and what we know now that we wish we had known then will inspire them to live their best lives now.

****

From Dawn:

Listen. Being a teen was hard. I remember it so clearly: the insecurities, the doubts, the fickleness, the fear, the fights with friends, the crushes, trying to please your parents, trying to impress your teachers, all of it. HARD.

But, today’s teens have it even harder. They have all of that above, plus the added pressure of social media. If there had been social media when I was in high school, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have graduated, and I think my parents would agree with me on that.

I realized just how tough it is for teens these days on a recent trip to Little Rock, Arkansas. There, I talked to the mom of a 15-year-old daughter who told me about the pain she has to see her daughter go through daily when she compares herself to others on social media. Remember that party you didn’t get invited to in 9th grade? Well, imagine having to see pictures of it on Instagram the next day. Remember the guy you had a crush on who asked out your best friend? Imagine having to see pictures of them hand-in-hand on Facebook. SUPER HARD.

That next night, I drove to my Dad’s house in Hot Springs, Arkansas and saw a picture of me at 15 years old, hanging on his wall. I saw this gorgeous girl and was shocked, because that was not the girl that I remembered. The girl I remembered was chubby, with braces and filled with nervousness and insecurity. She was scared of being too much – and not enough – all at the same time.

I ended up writing a post about it, and was overwhelmed by the comments, Facebook messages, texts and emails that I received in response. My feelings of wishing I could go back and speak to 15-year-old-me really had struck a chord. Hundreds of women wrote to me, expressing that they too look back and wish they could tell their 15-year-old selves that they were perfect as is, and that everything was going to be okay. Sometimes, that’s all we need to hear: “You’re okay, you’re okay, you’re okay, you’re okay.”

So, I’ve decided to do something about it, and start a movement. It’s called the “Dear 15 Me Challenge,” or #Dear15Me for you hashtaggers out there. #Dear15Me is a movement where we can share our stories and struggles of when we were 15-years-old – and share our hindsight vision – to encourage teens to love and accept themselves, just as they are right now at this very moment.  Helping teens tackle their teenage years with the confidence, grace, wisdom and ease we wish we’d had. Here are the details. I really hope you’ll be a part of it, and that we can help make the journey a little smoother for teens out there today.

#Dear15Me : To inspire teens and women and men, at every age, I encourage you to share what you would say to yourself at 15, having the hindsight, wisdom and experience that you do now. I urge you to 1) post a picture of yourself at 15, with a caption saying: “Dear 15 Me…” and follow it with 2) what  you were feeling at that age, and most importantly, 3) what you wish you could tell yourself at 15. It’s that easy.

No picture readily available of you at 15? No problem. Any pic of you as a teen will do, or just post a pic of you now, holding the sign “Dear 15 Me…” and write your story and what you wish you could tell 15-year-old you in the caption.

While there’s no time machine to take us back to 15 to correct our thinking then, we hope our past experiences and heartfelt words will help inspire – and make the road a little easier – for teens today. Tag 5 of your friends and ask them to do the same. Together, we can make a difference in the confidence of today’s teens. And be sure to tag @Dear15Me and @BeautyFrosting so we can share your experiences with our social media channels.

“I wish you could see what you look like to me. Don’t you know you’re made of stars? You can do anything – dance, laugh and sing. You’re carried by love. All that you see will come to be. So, what will you do, beautiful you?” (Dawn McCoy)

Ladies Who Lunch: Kissing Up with Italia Ricci of Chasing Life

What? Ladies Who Lunch Interview with Italia Ricci
When? August 14, 2014

Where? At the Wet n Wild More Kisses event at the Walgreen’s Hollywood Flagship Store

Who? Italia Ricci of ABC Family’s Chasing Life

Not only did I get to see my old friend, Fergie again (looking glamorous per usual) at the Wet n Wild More Kisses event at Walgreen’s a few weeks ago, but I also had the pleasure of getting to sit down and visit with a new friend, Italia Ricci of ABC Family’s Chasing Life as she donned her pretty pink in honor of the big event.

Fergie and Italia Ricci at the Wet n Wild More Kisses event at Walgreen's in Hollywood

Channeling Jackie O and laughing with her then-boyfriend, now fiancé (!!!) Robbie Amell  (of CW’s The Flash), I learned about her no-nonsense style, her color in a box (for real) and her intense gratitude for her fans. And let me tell you, the kissing going on outside wasn’t the only romance in the air. These guys are c-u-u-u-u-u-t-e! See for yourself.

DM: Well, hey Italia! Ok. Let’s start with the basics. When people ask you what you do for a living, what do you say?

Italia: I pretend.

DM: Got any nicknames ya wanna share?

Italia: Mom I get from a lot of my friends because I’m a mom. My boyfriend calls me Fatty because I eat like I’m a 9-year-old boy.

DM: I love it. What do you always carry in your purse?

Italia: I carry everything. Literally, if you were stranded on a desert island, you would want my purse. If someone’s like, “I’ve got a stain!” Don’t worry. Italia’s got Shout wipes. Shout wipes are very important. I’ve got a little leather bag with every single emergency pharmaceutical you would ever need. Antihistamine. Aspirin.

DM: So you ARE a mom. You really are.

Italia: Oh yeah. I’ve got the little bags in a giant tote – I’ve got my pharmacy one with like band-aids and everything you’d ever need – even blister covers! Then I’ve got the little sewing one with like tweezers and ear plugs, in case you need it. Eye drops. I literally have everything.

DM: Do you have makeup anywhere in there?

Italia: I mean, I didn’t do this today but I really only wear lipgloss and maybe mascara. But as a little kid, I was always obsessed with Wet n Wild clear lipgloss that tasted like watermelon. It was my very favorite.

DM: What is the best beauty advice you’ve ever received?

Italia: Less is more.

Italia effortlessly walking through the crowd at the Wet n Wild More Kisses event at Walgreen's

DM: Do you have any daily rituals – or, as I call them “daily delights,” that just make the day a little happier?

Italia: Respond to fan mail. Every day.

DM: What’s the worst beauty sin you ever committed?

Italia: Oh GOD. I tried that mayonnaise hair mask once. It didn’t go over well for me. But I do dye my hair out of a box. I did it with Frost and Glow this week Just the blonde one – the highlighting kit. Everyone was like, “Don’t do this. It’s a mistake.” I had the cap on and was like Wheeee! Everybody can do it. It’s like $12.

DM: What beauty products can you not live without?

Italia: Toothpaste. Sunscreen. And a round brush.

DM: I like the no-nonsense…and certainly not in my house. Don’t see that very often in this town. What’s your typical workout routine?

Italia: I occasionally work out. I do Cardio Barre. It’s amazing. I feel like a dancer. You don’t realize what a difference it’s making in your body until you’re looking in the mirror and you’re like, “Hey, butt, heyyyy-yyy.”

Italia’s boyfriend, Robbie Amell, interjects: And we walk everywhere.

Italia: And, welcome my boyfriend, Robbie Amell. He’s on Flash on the CW.”

DM: Now, that’s a supportive girlfriend! Giving you a promo during her interview. Niiiiiice. What do you wish you could tell 13-year-old you?

Robbie (laughing): If you could see a picture of 13-year-old her….

Italia: Take the dreadlocks out and stop practicing witchcraft.

DM: Seriously? I think there’s a story there. But that’s for another time. What would 13-year-old you think of your life now?

Robbie (laughing): No way!!

Italia: That will NEVER be my life. I wish that could happen! Yeah, “no way” is a good one.

DM: And, lastly, what would your theme song be?

Italia: Perfect Day by Hoku.

High-Low 1/27/14: Sweeter Than A Cupcake & Sitting With Sadness (thanks, Louis C.K.!)

Here’s my High-Low this week. It was a week filled with sweetness, gratitude, love and light and a little bit of sadness. I just consider myself lucky that I get to feel the entire range of emotions. I’m realizing that there are many people who either physically can’t feel these emotions or have blocked themselves to where they’re devoid of feeling emotions on such a scale. So while that means that I’ll have my share of ups and downs over the years, it also means that I’ll be able to continue to share my High-Lows with you all. Lucky ducks…

HIGH: SWEETER THAN A CUPCAKE

HIGH: SWEETER THAN A CUPCAKE - "I Dream To…" Mentor Day with Step Up Women's Network at the Dermalogica headquarters

This past Saturday morning, I showed up at the Dermalogica headquarters in Carson, California to participate in Step Up Women’s Network “I Dream To…” Mentor Day. I am a visionary member of Step Up Women’s Network and am a big fan because their sole mission is to help inspire girls from under-resourced communities to live up to their full potential. They have done this so effectively that 100% of Step Up graduates over the past 4 years have been accepted to and currently attend college.

I had no idea what to expect and to be honest, I was a little nervous. But after meeting my mentee, “S.”, all of my nervousness went away. We were very different and yet we had qualities at our cores in common which bonded us.

My goal going into the day was to encourage, inspire and motivate her. So imagine my surprise, after spending the day together when I was the one tearing up as I read her letter of gratitude to me and realizing how much she had taught me.

I learned more from this 15-year-old in one day than I have learned from most people in the past month. And by sharing with her some of my successes, struggles and strategies, I actually learned lessons that I didn’t even know I needed to learn.

I am so thankful to have met S. and to have been able to share this day together. My hope is that she took as much away from the day with me as I took from my time spent with her.

LOW: SITTING WITH SADNESS

BeautyFrosting quotes, BeautyFrosting

LOW: SITTING WITH SADNESS (Thanks, Louis C.K.!!)

This past week – like so many other weeks we have in life – I had a bump in the road. I felt sad, disappointed, confused and totally out of my comfort zone. As the extrovert that I am, my initial instinct was to pick up the phone and call a close friend. Usually, that’s what I do. I call my Mom or call or hang out with one of my best friends and share my woes with anyone that I trust. I tell them what’s going on so they can help me work through it and by the end of the call or visit, I get over it and feel better…somewhat.

But this time was different. As I was picking up the phone, I remembered that chat that Louis C.K. had on Conan about cell phones, sadness and basically how it all ties back into our fear of sadness and our fear of being alone. He told a story about getting really sad in his car while listening to Bruce Springsteen’s “Jungleland” (best song ever!!) and how his first instinct was to text like 50 people. But instead of doing that, he took contrary action and just let the sadness hit him like a truck and pulled over and bawled his eyes out. He said that afterwards, he actually felt better because it was like there were antibodies of happiness that came along to counter the extreme sadness.

So, I tried it. I sat in the sadness and let it take me over. I cried like a baby on my bed. I let myself feel out of control. And, well, it worked. I’m not saying that it made me feel all better but it certainly helped me get a little bit more comfortable in my own skin that day. And I truly feel blessed that I get to have those sad moments because they make the happy ones that much sweeter.

BF Asks: What was your High-Low this week?

*So what exactly is a High-Low, you ask? High-Low is the BEST & WORST part of your day, week, month, etc. I started this tradition with friends & family after I discovered it through a movie decades ago. Not only is it useful for reflection sake but it is also an excellent way to communicate with your spouse, kids or friends over the dinner table. By introducing this tradition to folks, parents have told me that their kids have opened up more and friends have told me that their spouses have become more communicative. Try it for yourself and let me know what your experience is!

In-My-Tub-Tuesday: Being Sexy Shampoo & Conditioner makes me feel SEXXXXY

I have been feeling a bit, um, sexier lately. Why, you ask? Oh, it’s lots of things – the changing of the planets, the solar eclipse,  the fact that I’m really starting to embrace being a woman and the boudoir shoot I shot on Sunday (stay tuned for more of that). But there’s also a product line that I’ve fallen in love with all over again. And it makes me feel sensual and seductive.

Being sexy thanks to Rusk Being Sexy shampoo & conditioner

Back in February, I used it and fell in love. And so did one of my Instagram followers & friend, @PurpleLynn: “@beautyfrosting Your hair is so shiny it’s RIDICULOUS!”.

My reply? “@purplelynn, THANK YOU!!! It’s a new shampoo and conditioner! And it works! Sulfate-free too! @Rusk Being Sexy!!” I realized that I sounded like an ad. And that’s exactly what I sound like when I truly love something.
Seriously, y’all, this stuff is gold. Rose gold (see? ‘cuz the packaging is PINK!). And it’s affordable to boot at around $15 – $24 depending on your store of choice.
As my Instagram comment mentioned, Rusk Being Sexy haircare is sulfate-free, cleans the hair without stripping hair of its essential oils and helps protect color-treated, keratin-treated or brazilian blowout-treated hair. My hero.
I’m also a big fan because it seems to prevent greasy hair and scalp. This leads to healthy, conditioned hair full of body, bounce, fullness and shine.
How does it do this? Through “Fision Hair”, a unique blend of ingredients said to help revive the scalp and hair follicle for healthier looking hair.
To be honest, I don’t know what that means exactly but I don’t care.
I just know that it works, all while being sulfate-free, and leaving my hair looking glossy and gorgeous!
Sexy indeed.

BF Asks: What makes you feel sexy?!

High-Low 9/30/13: Hey, Girl, Hey!

Y’all, last week was filled with highs and a little lesson posing as a low, as well. But, oh, how high the highs were!

HIGH

This week was all about my girls. That’s right. “Hey, girl, hey!”, “Where my girls at?” and all of that mumbo-jumbo.

I have never understood girls that don’t get along with girls. It confounds me and – to be honest – I have a hard time trusting girls who say that. I only feel like this because the girls in my life are utterly magical. Intelligent, caring, beautiful, insightful, fun women who know just what you need – need to know, need to do, need to hear – at any given moment.

Whether it’s a fun day at the race tracks for Santa Anita Racetrack opening day…

Girl time at Santa Anita Racetrack opening day

an unintentional road trip because you take the wrong freeway…

Unintentional road trip on way to Santa Anita Racetrack with Amy

a champagne, laughter and girly talk-filled dinner at BLVD 16 Restaurant and Lounge with my girl, Whitney of hoopLA

Dinner at BLVD 16 at Hotel Palomar

an impromptu girls night out at Hotel Palomar after dinner…

Gosh - I wish we looked like we were having a little fun here. Mini Slumber Party with my girl, Whitney Lader, of hoopLA

or meeting a new girlfriend at Hotel Cafe who just-so-happens to date an old friend…

At Hotel Cafe - New girlfriends (like Katie Barnes) are such blessings and sometimes come right when you need them!

or simply mood-boosting, laughter-inducing and spirit-lifting talks and texts with good friends like Jennifer Chan, Jennifer Tiller, Hope Banks, Sarah Jane Morris and Megan O’Brien

these girls made my heart happy and my soul sing this week.

I am so lucky to have such sweet, insightful and fun friends who make me feel my best when I’m at my worst and make the world at its worst seem like the happiest place of Earth. Seriously, we’re talking borderline Disneyland, here.

Thank you to each and every one of you who make my day brighter every single day!

LOW

Really, more than a low, I had a real moment of clarity this week. See, when it came to certain parts of my life, I realized that I was acting from a place of fear rather than a place of joy and gratitude. Who knows why this was how I chose to respond to new feelings, new people and new changes in my life but it was how I was operating. And, guys, this just doesn’t serve us.

Rather than living in the moment and just being grateful, I was nervous, worried and, well, just not myself. So I decided to stop, take a step back and look at this moment in my life as what it is – a moment of being unsure. A moment of not being in control, not knowing what would happen next and a beautiful mystery of this thing called life.

I realized that I had to accept that it’s not only okay – but totally healthy – to have these unsure, unsettled, uncomfortable feelings. At that point, I chose to not let my fear override a potential for growth and maybe even great happiness. So, see? It really was a lesson just disguised as a low. Now, let’s see if I can’t carry this way of thinking forward! That would truly be the greatest gift of all…

By My Bedside: Eos Lip Balm Smooth Sphere

Sometimes nothing satiates the sweet tooth besides something, well, sweet.

But, let’s be honest. When it’s 10 pm at night, the last thing we need to be reaching for is a sugary snack. Sweet lip balm is a sweet, and smarter, choice.

Which is why I keep Eos Lip Balm Smooth Sphere (my pick this month is the new Strawberry Sorbet) next to my bed.

Bedtime sweet treat

Its cute little pink egg-shaped packaging honestly makes me happy every time I look at it.
Seriously, look at it. How cute is it?

Too cute: Eos Lip Balm - Smooth Sphere in Strawberry Sorbet ($4)

And besides being attractive to two of my senses (sight and smell, people), I loooove what it does for my lips.

Its clear formula hydrates my dry lips with shea butter and vitamin E all while being 95% organic and free of many of the things we don’t want (Gluten, Petrolatum, Phthalate and Paraben-free).

And, seriously, it couldn’t be cuter if it tried. These cute little, colorful, twist-off lip, egg-shaped lip balms are perfect party favors for teens or pre-teens and make great Back to School gifts. Try slipping one in your 12-year-old’s lunch; I can pretty much bet you’ll be the coolest mom that day on the playground.

These happy little Eos eggs go everywhere you do. Perfect for the office drawer, in the console of your car, in your purse or carryon bag.

BF QOD: Beautiful You

In BeautyFrosting's own words...Beautiful You

Happy Friday, beauties!
Today’s BF QOD is straight from the horsey’s mouth…mine!
That’s right! The quote is from “Beautiful You”, a song I wrote for my 2008 debut album, Sweet Time.

“You can do anything. Dance, laugh and sing. You’re carried by love. All that you see will come to be so what will you do…beautiful you?” (Dawn McCoy

I wrote “Beautiful You” for a few young friends I’d met and then, as it happens sometimes, I realized I was writing the words for myself.

I’d like to say I was writing them for adolescent me…but..no. I was writing them for my friends – and for that insecure girl who kept mocking me back in the mirror every night.

So I wrote it for other girls in hopes they might never meet that mean girl in the mirror.

Funny how that happens.

Enjoy them, share them and I hope they mean as much to you now as they meant to me!

BF Asks: What words make you feel more beautiful and secure?

BF QOD: Einstein delights…

BF QOD: Einstein Delights

“The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before.” (Albert Einstein)

Oooh, I like that. A lot.
