Coachella 2015: Lowchella

Coachella 2015 in a nutshell?

Lowchella.

Stayed in a beautiful home of a beautiful friend, got to wear the most delicious pieces and jewels, met some of my fashion heroes, drank champagne, attended fashion shows, went nightswimming, and clinked glasses at Liberace’s Palm Springs home.

Shoes off & twirling, whilst channeling my inner wood nymph, at Coachella parties.

This year’s Coachella was a little different. As many of you know, I lost my beloved Uncle AV last week. So I decided to do a MiniChella or LowChella, as I was calling it.

I left on Saturday morning, and arrived at my talented designer friend, Christopher Kennedy’s, home in Palm Springs, which he shares with his husband, David.

Christopher Kennedy's Living Room - just a taste of how gorgeous this place is!

I literally couldn’t have stayed in a nicer home or hotel. Christopher’s house is the ultimate in livable luxury. In fact, it was just featured as the Christopher Kennedy Showcase Home during Modernism Week in Palm Springs. And while it’s a home – with a backyard that doubles as a golf course, and a pool in the front yard – I definitely felt like I was at the chicest of Palm Springs resorts.

This is Christopher & David's backyard!! HEAVEN.

On Saturday, Christopher and I headed over to the Pandora Jewelry #PandoraStyle VIP house at  Le Parker Meridien Palm Springs.

See how happy this Free People pantsuit makes me? SO happy!

First up? We sat front row at the Plenty by Tracy Reese fashion show at Le Parker Meridien (my fave!!!), and had the pleasure of checking out her tropical getaway-inspired collection. Then, we picked up some Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen, mingled with friends, and chillaxed with some delicious popsicles with Minnetonka.

Popsicle o'clock with Christopher Kennedy at Minnetonka

Next up? A wardrobe change, of course! Into the ultimate bohemian Coachella Cinderella dress – Enak Tiered Maxi Dress ($268) and Heather Gardner jewels- and off into the sunset, I went.

This beautiful boho dress is currently available at Anthropologie. Enak Tiered Maxi Dress ($268)

Wee headed over to the PopSugar party at The Viceroy, where I got to catch up with one of my favorite ladies, Mara Ferreira of M Loves M.

Always good to see this girl!

And, then there was a surprise! Christopher, being the BRILLIANT and in-demand designer that he is, told me had re-designed Piazza Di Liberace – LIBERACE’S HOUSE!! I kid you not. And, ohhh, the owners just happened to be throwing a fabulous fête that night. I gathered up my girls, Shana Honeyman and Mad Men costume designer & Shoes Of Prey designer, Janie Bryant, and headed on over.

It was everything and MORE than we had hoped. Christopher – and the owners – had maintained the Liberace luxury we all adore, while transforming the space into the epitome of Christopher’s signature livable luxury.

We were so in awe, that we didn’t want to leave. So we didn’t.

Oh, y'know…just Janie, Shana and I posing with the Statue of Liberty in Liberace's backyard…like ya do.

It’s no surprise that the highlights of Coachella for me were all fashion-related this year.

Ask anyone who was at this year’s Coachella, and they’ll all tell you the same thing: Coachella has become the new Fashion Week of spring. When I spoke to Tracy Reese and Nanette Lepore at the Pandora brunch on Sunday, at Le Parker Meridien, they both said that “festival season” is a whole new season of design for them to create.

Dishing with Tracy Reese & Nanette Lepore about festival style

And, then the day got even more fashionable and sweeter, when I got to spend the afternoon with fashion icon & Sex & The City costume designer, Patricia Field, and one of my favorite folks, Lara Eudolian of Pretty Connected.

We had a ball sitting front row, while watching the Whit fashion show.

And then the sweetness all got stirred together, when Tracy Reese headed over to our row.

What had started as a very sad week ended up being one of my favorite weekends – what  with staying with a good friend, making new friends, and getting to meet 4 of my fashion heroes. I couldn’t have wished for better.

Although, I will say that it sounds like a dream I may have once had.

So long, Palm Springs. I’ll be seeing you again, soon. After all…you know I can’t stay too far away from you…lover.

Bye-bye, Palm Springs…for now

BF Asks: Have you ever matched an outfit to a makeup product?

Brusha Brusha Brusha: Philips Sonicare PowerUp Toothbrush

Let’s be honest, here. With all of that delicious Thanksgiving fare up ahead this week, you’re gonna need this little guy, the Philips Sonicare PowerUp Tootbrush ($14.99).

Sonicare PowerUp Toothbrush ($14.99) - THE toothbrush for the holidays ahead!

From the #1 dentist-recommended power toothbrush brand, the battery-operated Philips Sonicare PowerUp Toothbrush delivers more brush strokes in one day than a manual can provide in a month.

I brush my teeth while wearing rings...

So, what’s the big deal? Well, dentists agree that people who brush correctly with a power toothbrush have better dental hygiene than those who don’t. And, what do I mean by correctly? Well, instead of brushing in a circular motion like you do with a manual toothbrush, with a power toothbrush, you want to hold the brush in one place as you move from quadrant to quadrant. It’s so powerful that too much circular movement is too rigorous for that gum line!

Doing so with the Philips Sonicare PowerUp Tootbrush ($14.99) will give you better checkups guaranteed by reducing cavities and whitening teeth. I’m living proof of the magic of Sonicare – I haven’t had a cavity in 6 years!

I brush my teeth wearing shiny things...

My favorite part of this particular Sonicare toothbrush is that it’s great for me, in that it’s great for travel. Super handy and lightweight to pack, it is your go-to grin-maker this holiday season! Whether you choose to travel with it or gift it to someone else, it’s sure to put a smile on your face.

Cavities have NO place in photos - the Sonicare PowerUp toothbrush makes sure they don't!

Know what else’ll put a smile on your face? How ’bout $4 off your Philips Sonicare PowerUp Tootbrush ($14.99)? Yep, shop anytime today, 11/23/14  through 12/14/14 at any of these retailers, and $4 will automatically be deducted from the price: Usa.Philips.com,Amazon.comWalmart.com and Drugstore.com.

So, get those pearly whites in tip-top shape for the season of fun, food and photo opps!

BF Asks: How many times do you brush your teeth per day?

Homeward Bound!

I love visiting my hometown of Dallas in October.

The fall colors, warm days and cool night and, most importantly, Big Tex and the State Fair of Texas just represent everything fall is about to me!

I set sail yesterday on Virgin Airlines and after a night of dinner at Mi Cocina and nightswimming in my mom’s pool, today I am sitting on the couch getting some work done.

I’ll be here for 14 days and am just soaking in the Texas I know and love.

Here’s a little taste of my travels yesterday.

Homestate-bound for Texas with my little friend. No, silly, I’m not talking about my @kyumelange Eclair bag; I’m talking about that smushed little face in the bag, Miss Ellie. Mi Cocina, here we come!!!! #salsaandmargaritasarealliwant

Homewards bound.

In @uber en route to Mom’s w/ the uber cool Ellster. Two words come to mind: Mi. Cocina.

It’s like my Coca-Cola bottle knew I was going home yesterday. And, of course, I had to bring some LA goodies for the family from my LA faves, @joansonthird@milkjarcookies ! Joan’s Coconut cupcakes for mom (she won’t let me in the door without em), Joan’s chocolate covered gummy bears for Brother and@milkjarcookies for everyone!

Can't go home empty-handed!

And it begins. My family usually dines at Mi Cocina about 80% of the time I’m in town.

Yummmmmm

BF Asks: What family traditions do you and your family enjoy when you’re home?

Valentine’s Faves 2014

Ahhhh, Valentine’s Day. For me, it always recalls homemade valentines at the kitchen table, sweetheart candies and…crushes on boys.

Some things never change.

But then, some things do.
This year, I decided to host a little shoot over here at The Cupcake Palace to capture all of my Valentine’s faves this year. Those of you who follow me on Instagram (@beautyfrosting) have already seen these but of course I wanted to include some pics for those readers who haven’t seen them yet.
Hope you enjoy these little Valentine’s daily delights as much as I enjoyed shooting them!

A love letter to all of you: You are enough. You are beautiful. You are loved. SO loved. Xoxo, Me (*hydrangea ℅ Rendez-Vous Florist on 3rd Street)  *coffee cup by Sur La Table and *Love Note stationery from Anthropologie

These are a few of my favorite things… Beginning with a heart charm necklace and heart cutout ring by FleaMarket Girl

My most beloved Valentines gifts this year? A ruby red glittering bottle of Pinot Noir from Hope At Home & One Hope Wine & a V-day hued Kate Spade New York iPhone case. Add in that Anthropologie "Hello Gorgeous" valentine's card and I'm smitten.

More of my Valentine faves? A cream puff of pink thanks to Tarte Cosmetics Lipsurgence and cheek stain in Fearless , Jouer Cosmetics lip gloss in Peony , Haute Hostess pink chiffon apron , James Serra Cristallio rosé champagne, cake pops from SweetXO and a another sweet valentine card from Anthropologie. Pink perfection.

Really boys, you shouldn't have. In a floral paradise or being bombarded with bouquets by boys? Only you can decide...

And I hope you had a very, very SWEET Valentine’s day with the ones who steal your heart away.

High-Low 2/10/14: Showtime & Expectations

With everything that happened in the last week, it felt like it was more like a month! Wednesday was one of the most challenging days I’ve ever had because literally everything that could go wrong went wrong. I had two band members who had to take their loved ones to the hospital unexpectedly for dire emergencies and there was a world of changes going on that I just was not prepared for.

But then there was so much sweetness that I thought my heart would burst. Ah, life, how you love to throw the curveballs and the cupcakes at us all at the same time. Without further ado, my weekly High-Low.

HIGH: Showtime

Beau’s Debut! Well, now that People Magazine announced it last week, I can announce that my heart just got a little bit fuller – and pinker – thanks to the birth of Beau Katherine Brower!!

HIGH: Beau's Debut!! I got to visit her on her first day at the hospital and I fell instantly in love. Swoon.

Beau was born to some of my best friends, Ned and Sarah Brower (also known as actress Sarah Jane Morris) on Saturday, March 1st and she is just gorgeous and perfect! And since they waited to find out the sex, it was the sweetest of surprises that she was a girl!!! I went to meet Miss Beau and, of course, couldn’t show up to the hospital empty-handed! So I swung by my fave baby store, Bel Bambini on Robertson and picked up some pink to properly celebrate Beau’s debut! I’m utterly smitten and am determined to spoil her rotten. As you can see, it’s already started.

Pink presents for Beau from Bel Bambini - I couldn't help myself! Girls are so fun!!

Hotel Cafe As many of you may know – and many may not – I am a singer/songwriter. I’m not full-time anymore at all but I still write and love to play my favorite venue here in LA (and my home away from home), The Hotel Cafe.

High: Hotel Cafe Show 2/8/14 - For The Lovers, Love-Hopeful, Heartbreakers & Heartbroken

I had the pleasure of playing this past Saturday and it was just the most fun! I got to play with some of my all-time favorite musicians and friends including Ben Peeler, Garrett Hanson, Joel Martin, Jon Button and Malcolm Cross. I realized it had been 10 months since I’d played there and that is 10 months too long. I love to title my shows so this Valentine’s one was called “For The Lovers, Love-Hopeful, Heartbreakers and Heartbroken.” One could argue that I was workin’ through some pretty powerful emotions up on that stage but I worked it out through singing my heart out, dancing and seeing 100 of my friends’ faces smiling at me from the audience. It was just perfect. And it’s gotta happen more often. It does my soul so much good.

This photo perfectly captures my joy of the evening. Just bliss. (*Dress is Plenty by Tracy Reese for Anthropologie and sideways cross necklace is by Flea Market Girl)

 LOW: Expectations

Low: Expectations

Let me start by saying that I am so grateful for the week I’ve had and the amazing people that I have in my life. Whenever I express the lows, it’s not to complain but rather to really experience these lows so that I might see the highs more clearly and appreciate them more richly. This week I let myself be let down by a few people. What do I mean by that? I mean that I had some expectations of people and well, they fell short. Not the people but my expectations. I was expressing my annoyance and hurt with my dear friend (and talk show host/therapist) Matt Marr and he blew my mind once again with his insight and wisdom. He said to me, “Expectations are future resentments.” Word. They sure are.

And with me, this goes tenfold. I don’t have many pet peeves but one of them is when someone makes a plan with me and cancels or doesn’t follow through. It gets under my skin like nothin’ else. Those closest to me know this and try to operate accordingly. But what I’m realizing is that I need to lower my expectations a bit. People are human. Things come up. People make mistakes. I’m not saying it’s going to happen today but an ongoing goal of mine is to become a little less rigid and a little more forgiving in terms of people who don’t meet my expectations as I think they should. Thank you for these thought-provoking words, Matty.

BF

BF Asks: What was your High-Low this week?

*So what exactly is a High-Low, you ask? High-Low is the BEST & WORST part of your day, week, month, etc. I started this tradition with friends & family after I discovered it through a movie decades ago. Not only is it useful for reflection sake but it is also an excellent way to communicate with your spouse, kids or friends over the dinner table. By introducing this tradition to folks, parents have told me that their kids have opened up more and friends have told me that their spouses have become more communicative. Try it for yourself and let me know what your experience is!

Holiday Delights: Home for the Holidays…

Holiday Delights: We're Goin' Where?!

Right now, I’m in the air en route to Dallas with Miss Ellie sleeping soundly in the bag by my feet, a laptop on my tray table, Creme de La Mer slathered on my face and my fellow Dallas-turned-LA blogger, Devon Rachel, on my right in the window seat. Everything is so peaceful and it just feels like all is right in the world.

I, on the other hand, am as giddy as a schoolgirl. I have always gotten so excited to go home. This flight from LA to Dallas has become such a welcome ritual that I look forward to and savor. And I love airports. I always meet the coolest people in airports; people who have ended up being lasting influences in my life – from my friend, Mario – the retired policeman from Mill Valley who is my “death buddy” (we text each other every time a celebrity dies – I know, morbid but I love it) to the guy in the band I met en route to Nashville and dated for a spell to the boy I kissed on the plane. Hey, don’t judge. It was fun – and, besides, it gives me stuff to write about and something for y’all to read. Yep, airports and I are pretty tight.

So here I am on another plane on another trip home to Dallas for another holiday spent with my family in Dallas. I cannot wait to see my family and friends! You can find us at Mi Cocina Preston Forest pretty much every night during my visit, FYI. But I will say that this is the first time I’m truly sad to leave my LA friends who have become my family. As much as I love being in Dallas for Christmas – and really can’t imagine being anywhere else – I really love Los Angeles in December. Between Santa & the gingerbread house at The Grove to the decorations in Beverly Hills lining Wilshire, my eternally summery city knows how to appreciate winter even when it’s 70 degrees outside.

So I just want to take a moment to say “Thank You” to my LA friends-turned-family for making 2013 my best year ever! I love and appreciate every one of you so much.

And Dallas…I’m Comin’ home!!! Keep the salsa and margaritas flowin’, Mi Cocina

BF Asks: What’s your plan for the holiday?

High-Low 10/28/13, Part 2: Dallas Moments ( last 5 out of 10) and Pushing Buttons

HIGH: My Trip Home to Dallas, Part 1

Well, my trip home to Dallas was just one big High, really. So here are the last 5 of my Top 10 Dallas moments.

5) Moments with Mom. My mom is my best friend and we have too, TOO much fun when we get together. Whether it be high tea at Eden Cafe

Tea w/ Mom is one of my favorite traditions that we have. We've been doing it since I was 8!!

or sharing shocking secrets at Mi Cocina

Oh, what will we talk about next? I suppose it just depends on the adventures we have between now and Christmas...

You never know what’s going to come up in one of our tête-à-têtes!

4) With all of my family and old friends in Dallas, it’s always fun to find a new one. That’s why I adored getting to happy hour it up at Truck Yard with my new friend, KellyAnn Sutton of Anthropologie. KellyAnn and I actually met through Instagram!! How current is that? And we were delighted to find that we’re definitely meant to be friends!! So thankful to know her.

Happy Hour at the super cool Truck Yard in Dallas with my new friend, KellyAnn Sutton of Anthropologie

3) While many of my friends have nieces and nephews, our family has always veered a bit from the norm. So, I was delighted to get to spend a little quality time with my big brother, David, and my stuffed coyote nephew, Archibald by the pool. Yep, totally normal – us McCoys.

With my stuffed-coyote-nephew, Archibald...don't ask.

2) As if you thought we hadn’t gone to Mi Cocina enough already as a family, we also take our friends. It’s become a tradition that we sip margaritas and snack on tex-mex at Mi Cocina with my dear friends from college, Tadd and Jenna Tate. We always laugh our way through the meal and we always – and I do mean, ALWAYS – close the place down!

Another night of oversharing & laughter at Mi Cocina with my family & friends

1) One of my favorite bakeries on the planet is Tart Bakery in Dallas. So I was delighted when Tart sent me back to LA in style with a BeautyFrosting-themed cakelet! What a sweet and delicious delight!

A BF-themed cakelet from Tart Bakery in Dallas

LOW: Pushing Buttons

No family is perfect...

Well, after that much fun, something a little dreary was bound to happen. And it did the last night I was in Dallas. Our family went to Meddlesome Moth and, well, my big brother and I ended up getting into a tiff. Here’s the thing about family – the fact that you know each other best and have known each other longest is truly a double-edged sword. After all, they totally understand who you are because they’ve seen everything you’ve been through; but in times of struggle and conflict, they also really know how to push your buttons. So I was sad to leave without telling my brother goodbye. And I hate, hate, HATE doing that. But the upside? We both realized our wrongs and apologized. We’re fine now but I just hate that I left Dallas on a sour note. My brother actually suggested coming up with a safe word so when we start pushing buttons again, we can agree to shelve the dispute for a different time. I liiiiiiike this. Now, just to put it into use…
