Coachella 2014: Pre-Coachella Primping Picks

Coachella Prep Time! *Feather headdress by Helen Kathleen Phillips

Coachella is upon us – the festival responsible for giving birth to summer’s hottest beauty and fashion trends. So how does one prep for a weekend in shorts, rompers, sundresses and swimsuits. The answer? Verrrrrrrry carefully.

In the midst of all the whimsical style we will see there, there is only one way that everyone needs to look: Golden, glowing, fresh-faced and FABULOUS!

So how do I get to looking like that with only a few hours to spare? Here we go. My top Pre-Coachella Primping Picks:

1) I start with Teadora Body Polish ($40) in Dawn (naturally) which is loaded with moisturizers and antioxidants and improves the elasticity and texture of skin. Since I’ve been told by some of my friends that their 17-year-old DAUGHTERS are going, I wanted to make sure that my skin looks as young as possible even if my body may not!

2) My favorite new trick is to use the Dermasuri Deep Exfoliating Mitt ($19.99) which helps your body scrub of choice and oils penetrate more deeply into the skin. And it works to prepare your skin for moisturization and -in my case – self-tanner which is what I did to prepare next.
3) Who doesn’t want to look like a Victoria’s Secret angel? After all, did you know that the VS angel’s hairstyle is the most requested hairstyle at blowdry salons? Well, I can at least tell you how to get their golden goddess tan. I love the Victoria’s Secret Self-Tanning Tinted Spray with 360 degree continuous application ($15). It sprays evenly and lets me see where I apply so there are no oopsies. I mean, ain’t nobody got time for oopsies when you’re trying to look like a supermodel! I emphasize, tryyyyying.
4) To get that fresh-faced glow that’s a must for Coachella, I turned to Sjal Kashmir Saphir (Restore) Perfecting Maskv($150). Perfecting, you say? Gimmesomeofthat. This mask reduces pore size while upping the skin’s oxygen intake all while lifting and firming the skin. Perfect, indeed!
5) Next up – after my tan had dried a bit – I hydrated my skin a bit for that dewy glow with The Honest Company’s Organic Body Oil ($9.95). Its soothing ingredients calm and hydrate skin while leaving the gift of a subtle sheen.
6) As for my mani, I was torn. The thing with Cochella, it is young, hip and fresh so your manicure needs to be that, as well. I got a mani at Côte before I left and I adore their nail polishes – particularly their #1 – which is a sheer, creamy peachy melon. Getting a mani there It feels like you’re at the beach! Then, for a little surprise splash of fun, I added 2 coats of L’Oreal Pop The Bubbles nail polish ($5.99) on the ring finger of each hand. Pop The Bubbles is a sparkling, sea-foamy turquoise with silver glitter in it. So it’s just the right amount of fun without looking like I broke into a 5-year-old’s nail polish – because that would not be Coachella-cool.
5) Prepping your hair for a weekend at Coachella is a must! Since Coachella is a little reminiscent of Woodstock, there isn’t a lot of hairwashing going on. There are braid bars and flower crown bars ready to add a little whimsy to your hair. So to get my hair super clean before I left, I relied on my trusty Tresemme Keratin Smooth shampoo/conditioner combo  to keep my hair clean, shiny, smooth, bouncy and full of life.
6) Lastly, I prepped by getting into the spirit with a braid. When I went to the Assembly Braid bar to get a crown braid ($30), they specifically told me how shiny my hair was! And I have to tell you, I am not someone who loves wearing my hair up (I always feel like I look like a boy, don’t ask) but I will be visiting Assembly Salon for a crown braid again when I need to spice up my look a bit. I felt like Princess Leia – and we know dudes loooove Princess Leia.

Here's one of the braids I was treated to at Assembly in preparation for Coachella. There's ribbon in there! RIBBON, I SAY!!!!

Okay, I’m off for the weekend, y’all! And I can’t wait to come back next week and share with you my packing list, what I wore and what trends I spotted! COOOOOAAAAAACHHHHEEEEELLLLAAAAA, BAAAAAAABY!!!

Main Event Monday: Jenny Packham, Laura Mercier & TRÉSemmé at Chateau Marmont

Every now and then, being a blogger allows me to attend some pretty fun and exclusive, insider events. And I always enjoy them – not like the sophisticate I wish I could be – but with the wide-eyed exuberance and delight of the 13-year-old that I really am inside! One of my favorite events recently was my visit with Jenny Packham at Chateau Marmont hosted by TRÉSemmé and Laura Mercier.

The gorgeousness that is Jenny Packham, Laura Mercier and TRÉSemmé

Not only did I get to have an in-person & up-close showing of Jenny Packham’s glamorous Spring/Summer 2013 Collection but I also got a sneak preview into Jenny’s Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection! Combine that with macarons and summer beverages…

getting runway-ready tips from the talented TRÉSemmé hairstylists & Laura Mercier makeup artists…and finding out that Jenny Packham is utterly delightful and you can color it a perfect day for yours truly!

The sweet, delightful and talented Jenny Packham & me! As my favorite designer, this was one off the Bucket List!

Jenny’s Spring Summer 2013 collection was heartily influenced by raucous Las Vegas in the 1960s and the lovely ladies who held their own with the legendary Rat Pack. These Hollywood darlings – who were known as The Rat Pack Mascots – didn’t chase the guys in the pack, they ran with it. Women like Lauren Bacall, Shirley MacLaine and Angie Dickinson were regarded as equals by this bawdy boys club as they possessed an ravishing recipe of beauty, scrappiness, intelligence and independence.

The RatPack Mascots & Inspirations for Jenny Packham's Spring/Summer 2013 Collection: Angie Dickinson, Lauren Bacall and Shirley Maclaine

This spunky, bold femininity they exuded is exactly what inspired Jenny’s vision for her Spring Summer 2013 collection. Ethereal silk chiffons in pale waterfall blues, soft eucalyptus greens, bold sunset oranges, full mimosa yellows, delicate lilacs and coqeuttish corals radiated on the runway!

The TRÉSemmé team created effortlessly beautiful updos. Chic chignons and low ponytails with a little edge in the front. Jeanie Syfu said, ” To get the look, we started blow drying the hair with TRÉSemmé Climate Control Mousse which gives the hair lots of texture, works on all hair textures, protects the hair and – best of all – works on all textures!  So we blow dried the back with a Mason Pearson brush….. side part, teased it just so that there was some texture and grip, over directed the front forward and then began twisting right over the eye.  That’s how you kind of get this dramatic sweep throughout the front, which Jenny loved! It was kind of the focal point of the hairstyle. And then we just began twisting all the way around the nape and then pulled everything into a low ponytail. We just made sure the ends were really polished and even though it has a lot of texture happening here, which I think makes it look very modern and fresh!”

As for the makeup, I was OBSESSED with the retro-yet-modern-and-sophisticated blue lid. So I had to ask Talia Shobrook for Laura Mercier what it was, of course! And here’s her answer: “ Ok, are you sitting down comfortably? It’s a black turquoise pencil and we set the pencil with Laura Mercier Wet/Dry Baked Eye Colour in Lagoon. It kind of has this sparkly look and if you look at it in the sunlight, it looks like jewelry. And then we used Faux Lash Mascara which is mascara that’s really voluminzing and we layered it on.  We let it dry and layered it on again.  Combed it through and then layered it on again. There was a lot of layering!”

Laura Mercier Lagoon-hued eyes - like jewels!

One of the many things I love about Jenny Packham is that her collections are inspired by real, living women who are- or have been – influential to other women. For her Autumn/Winter collection, Jenny was inspired by the great intellectual salons of 17th-century Paris where noble and cultured women gathered to discuss the arts, the philosophy of Voltaire and DesCartes and to produce and shape the literature of their time.

Away from the protocols of court, these creative and enlightened women played out a social game where they alone set the rules. The Salonnières were admired and respected for their sharp wit and good taste and splendor and sophistication of their rooms reflected the passion and energy of the women that filled them. The rich tones and hues of these salons – and the women who made them come to life – are evident in the midnight blues, scarlet reds, sultry cinnamon and lustrous opals in Jenny’s Autumn/Winter 2013 collection. In each piece, the spirit of freedom that imbued these women is alive and as empowering as ever.

With the clothes powerful, Jeanie Syfu and the TRÉSemmé team kept the hair delicate, demure and pretty. Using the TRÉSemmé 24-Hour Blow Dry Lotion and subtle accents like a pale blue velvet ribbon tied around a low, loose ponytail, the legacy – and integrity – of these forward-thinking women was kept in tact.

For makeup, Talia Shobrook and the Laura Mercier team kept it beautiful but bare by using products like Laura Mercier Lip Liner in Baby Lips.

They started with Laura Mercier Multi-Vitamin serum to plump the skin, the Laura Mercier Makeup Primer – Mineral to prime the skin and then a clean, natural lip and eye. Effective enough for runway but wearable enough for red carpet and every day!

While meeting Jenny was one of the highlights of my life as a wannabe-fashionists, getting to take home a bevy of beautiful products from Laura Mercier and TRÉSemmé were like the candy on top to me!

Sweet treats from Jenny Packham, Laura Mercier and TRÉSemmé

I can’t wait to experience these pretty, pretty products and share them with you guys!

Thanks for a beautiful – and memorable – day, Jenny Packham, Laura Mercier and TRÉSemmé!

In-My-Tub-Tuesday: TRÉSemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo & Conditioner – A Love Story

I am a big believer in keratin! Why? Because my hair is naturally curly (like Julia Roberts in Sleeping With The Enemy-curly) and my whole life I prayed for it not to be.

My hair is naturally a frizzier version of Julia Roberts' mane in Sleeping With The Enemy

Basically, my hair and I have been in a very fickle relationship for most of my life. An on-again/off-again love-hate affair. I admit it’s mostly my fault. See, I love my hair when it’s long, smooth, beautiful and bouncy but then there are the other days. The days when frizz is not my friend and my coif seems to be queen – treating me like a serf -paying no attention to my needs or wants.

The Frizz-Factor

I have tried – and loved – the Brazilian Blowout but missed the volume and variety when I was left with the stick-straight strands I’d always wished for. Then I moved on to the keratin treatment and my hair was shiny and lovely. But at $400/pop every 3-4 months, it’s an expensive option just to keep my ‘do frizz-free.

I was just debating what to do next when I had the  opportunity to try the TRÉSemmé Keratin Smooth collection (around $5.79 per product). I wondered if it would deliver the desired results both my coif and I craved. Well good news for my dysfunctional relationship. It did!

The caring keratin proteins infused every strand of my frazzled, frizzy hair leaving me with shiny, manageable and lovely locks for almost 3 days. Without stripping my hair of vital nutrients or weighing it down, my hair was shinier, bouncier and looked soooo healthy!

The lower-sulfate shampoo was gentle enough to use on my keratin-treated hair and the conditioner provided the lustrous results I longed for without weighing it down or making it go flat.

One happy TRÉSemmé Keratin Collection Camper!

I tried the shampoo and conditioner a few different ways. Washing with the shampoo and then conditioning with a dime-sized amount, conditioning my hair first and then shampooing and, lastly, washing with just the shampoo. Any which way you slice it, I was left with shiny, sensuous hair for just about $6 per product.

TRÉSemmé, you can count me as one happy keratin camper!

BF

Tress Tuesday: TRESemme Style Studio to the rescue!

I love beauty. Oh, how I love it! But when it comes to my hair, I am a 5-year-old child.

I know how to (very basically) blow-dry my hair, roll my hair, use a flatiron to straighten and throw my hair up into a ponytail for pilates. But when it comes to all of those gorgeous styles I see on Pinterest – you know the ones – beachy waves,  feathered hair, fishtail braid, hairline braid, etc. – I am lost.

Even when it comes to curling my hair, putting in bobby pins or doing a simple braid, I am clueless. It’s like my brain will just not convey the message to my hands.

For years, people have asked me “How can you know so much about makeup & skincare and know SO LITTLE about how to do your own hair?”

Well, lucky for me – and all of you fellow clueless hair architects out there – we now have a go-to spot for our tress training.

To our rescue: TRESemme Style Studio

In-My-Tub-Tuesday: TRESemme Liquid Gold Shine Therapy

In-My-Tub-Tuesday: TRESemme Liquid Gold Shine Therapy

In-My-Tub-Tuesday: TRESemme Nourishing Rituals Liquid Gold Shine Therapy

I know, I know – technically this should be called In-My-Shower-Tuesday but it just doesn’t have the same ring to it, does it?
You know what reminds me of a gold ring? (See what I did there?)
TRESemme Nourishing Rituals Liquid Gold Shine Therapy.

It’s like AFFORDABLE jewelry couture for your hair.

I know what you’re thinking: um, that’s a bit of a reach, BF.

I promise it’s not.

From the summer-fresh scent of TRESemme to the tiny, gold, sparkling, microcrystals in the golden treatment, this therapy is straight up sunshine in a bottle.

How does it work?

After shampooing your hair, you apply the TRESemme Liquid Gold Shine Therapy to your damp hair – concentrating on the middle to ends of your locks.

Leave on 3-4 minutes. If you’re like me, comb it through. It works beautifully as a detangler. Rinse. And, again – if you’re like me – rinse with cool water for extra special summer shine!

It’s a mini spa treatment for your shower! And I felt pretty pampered while I let it do its job as I shaved and exfoliated my legs. It makes any day a spa day!

When my hair dried (FYI, I let it dry naturally), I was amazed by my sexy, supple locks. The glasslike shine was gorgeous and I swear my hair seemed a bit fuller. It reminded me of that glossy hair that high school girls have. Know what I mean?

So, maybe, it’s high school in a bottle too! Only the good parts though.

And it’s got a high school-friendly price as it’s only around $4 and can be found in your fave drugstore.

Sunshine & High School in a bottle? Yes. TRESemme Liquid Gold Shine Therapy

Sunshine & High School in a bottle? Yes. TRESemme Liquid Gold Shine Therapy

Try it out for yourself and let me know what you think!
