Whatcha’ Wearin’ Wednesday, Milissa S.? Stila Color Balm Lipstick in Betsey at Joie

A few weeks ago, I had a doozy of a day. Don’t get me wrong it was an amaaaaazing, unbelievably productive day – what with a shoot and 3 events to attend that evening.

The stage for the evening was set with the first event I attended at the oh-so-fashionable Joie on Melrose. The champagne was flowing, chocolate delicacies were being passed around and – lucky for me -there were Stila makeup touchups and Kristie Streicher feathered brow shapings going on!

Getting the "feathered brow" from the Kristie Streicher brow goddesses

Perfect to prep me pretty for a busy fun – yet working – evening out!

In the midst of all this, I spotted this gorgeous girl with perfectly shaped, feathered brows wearing the perfect summer raspberry lipcolor. A double Whatcha’ Wearin’ Wednesday opportunity!!

Actress - and our WWW girl - Milissa S. sporting a sweet summer raspberry lip - the perfect pop for a Hollywood summer night

So you know what I had to ask!!

BF: I love your lipcolor! I love your brows! I’m Dawn by the way. What’s your name?

WWW: Milissa S.

BF: Well, Milissa S., I gotta ask ya – Whatcha’ Wearin’? And who did your brows?

WWW:Kristie Streicher and her team did my brows, of course! And the lipcolor is Stila Color Balm Lipstick in Betsey. I love it!

Our WWW girl, Milissa S., wearing Stila Color Balm Lipstick in Betsey

BF: Well, we do too! I can’t wait to try Stila Color Balm Lipstick for myself! And after hearing who shaped her gorgeous brows, I sat right down for a feathered brow shape-up with the Kristie Streicher brow goddesses! And I was pleased as punch with the results!

Milissa S. and I with our fabulously feathered brows from the brow goddessed - Kristie Streicher and team!

And – I have to add – I just barely avoided going home with this new friend.

Coveting: This Joie Kennedy Tote handbag in Daphne blue

I tried to be responsible, beauties. I really did. But I keep dreaming about this Joie Kennedy Tote handbag ($158). Oh, what to do!? Looks like it’s time to start a very important letter.

Dear Santa….

BF Asks: Have you tried Stila Color Balm Lipstick?

Primping with…Kiersten Warren

Happy Wednesday, beauties! I loved interviewing my friend, Kiersten Warren, for my latest FabFitFun column, “Primping with…”. It was an utterly delicious delight! And it was filled with soooo many details & tidbits that I couldn’t include it all on FFF. So here it is in its entirety for your reading pleasure.

I was so impressed with her full, colorful and love-filled life. And I am thrilled that she is writing about all of her daily (and past) adventures. Here’s to the next sweet & exciting chapter, Kiersten!

*********

(excerpts originally featured on FabFitFun 12/4/12)
Today, I’m primping with the always-funny, eternally youthful, ethereal sprite that is my friend, Kiersten Warren. You may recognize this talented actress, writer, wife and mother from Desperate Housewives, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Bunheads, Independence Day, Life Goes On or Saved by The Bell: The College Years.

We chose to meet at Chateau Marmont for a light lunch – shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad and a glass of sauvignon blanc for those who like to know such details – and primping. Having just left having tea with Tarte Cosmetics, I gifted Kiersten with Tarte’s Maracuja concealer. We had some fun with makeup in the middle of the Chateau Marmont and giggled a lot.

I had met Kiersten this past summer at a party where we became instant friends and decided we should definitely “make plans on purpose” (as Kiersten says) soon. 3 months later into our busy schedules, we had our first chance! Between her candor, wickedly clever humor, sweet nature wine and lovely presence, I couldn’t wait to share our chat with   you!

BF: Tell us about your beauty routine. Makeup?

KW: I wear Cle de Peau foundations for the light silky coverage. I never feel like it’s heavy and it reflects light really well. With that I’ll use the YSL Touche éclat combined with the Chanel concealer. I also love the Tarte Maracuja concealer you introduced me to. I’m always up for “concealing.” I have allergies and sometimes my under-eye region gets really puffy, and until the meds kick in I just have to deal. Then I like Shiseido powder in a compact to take along.

I use Dior Show mascara and usually MAC eyeshadows for their vibrant colors. As far as lipsticks go, I’m really liking my MAC reds. I think it’s “VAMP” that I use all the time. I don’t know for sure because Scarlett (my 7 year old) left her ice cream to melt in the car’s drink holder where I hide my lipstick and, resultantly, the label long ago died and had to be peeled off. I think it’s VAMP but I have Dior lip glosses in candy color shades in every purse so I could easily be wearing any of those.

BF: I feel very Steel Magnolias asking this. In fact, I shall do it with a southern accent. What is your signature fragrance?

KW: For years I’ve worn La Chasse Aux Papillons Eau de Toilette by L’Artisan Parfumeur. But lately I’ve been feeling unfaithful and reckless and have switched it up with those naughty Marc Jacobs triplets, Lola, Daisy and Dot.

BF: Naughty, indeed. And as for your lovely locks?

KW: I have dreadlock, curly, cotton candy hair. Hair like a 19th century Irish street orphan. Nicole Kidman’s is the classy version of my natural hair. So it needs to be dealt with by way of keratin treatments and then letting it come out to play a bit. Good thing with hair like mine is that there’s always volume. Bad thing is that it does what it wants if you let it, and that’s decidedly NOT PRETTY.

BF: I think we have very similar hair thanks to Mother nature. Mine is post-brazilian blowout right now. Getting my volume back! Everyone wants it when they don’t have it. But honey, it takes a village, doesn’t it?

KW: Gabor, my hair guy on Desperate Housewives, would take a deep sigh, close his eyes, do one cleansing yoga breath and say over my head as a daily mantra, “The hair will not win!”

BF: That. Is. Hilarious.

KW: Always made me laugh. Which is key. I prefer to work with a high level of joy. “Chuckle-headed-ness” even. Sutton Foster on Bunheads is fun like that as well.

BF: So what’s your go-to ‘do?

KW: Since I have curly hair I don’t wash it very much. Like every 3 or 4 days. So day one it’s down and wavy and bouncy and kind of perfect.  Day two is curlier. Three is a ponytail with a pretty headband. Day four is a hat.

BF: Shower or Bath?

KW: I prefer a bath. Showers to me are like an aquatic assault. Something you do when that’s all that is offered in your hotel room in Moscow.

BF: Oh my gosh. I could not love the way you put that any more. I always consider a shower basically a workout. Hmm…that might explain a few things.

BF: Do you have a nightly beauty ritual? You know something that helps you wind it down? (ex. for me – I never miss my bath and book every night)

KW: Every night I’ll make chamomile tea with honey and then have chilled slices of an Asian pear. Or a pomegranate.

BF (in my head): Well, color me impressed. Sophisticated. Very grown up.

KW: And it’s during that ritual that I pick out what I’ll wear to bed. Then I flip through a magazine while my husband, Kirk (writer’s note – Kirk Acevedo of Oz, Band of Brothers, Prime Suspect, Fringe,) finds our movie. Usually something horrifically scary that then he falls asleep to and I’m petrified into therapy because I can’t change the channel. I once left our tv on for 3 months because Kirk was away on location. Let it be known here officially that our Universal remote hates me. And the feeling is mutual.

BF: I love that the family drama only exists between you and, basically, an appliance.

BF: Back to business! Brows – wax or tweeze? Who’s your go-to?

KW: I go to Anastasia and let Katie Crecion work her magic on my brows.

BF: And what about those gorgeous, lush lashes? Amazing!!!

KW: Latisse. I use it, Yes. If it turns my eyes brown…whatever. I prayed for brown eyes as a child after reading Anne Frank. I wanted to look like her. To date they are still blue. But will keep you posted.

BF: You are lean and lithe. I cannot lie. I also love alliteration. How do you stay fit?

BF: I take a ballet-body sculpting class that is brutally efficient. I always wonder when I’m staggering around the next two days in agony, “why is it that I do this?” It can’t be to look sexier. Not when I look like an injured chimp staggering around wearing an adult diaper. Because that is how I walk after one of those workouts.

I’m very hard on myself physically. And it’s a shame really. As a competitive gymnast once upon a time, the capacity to even enjoy pecan pie has pretty much been beaten out of me. And so the end result is what? That I’m thin. It’s something to be pitied more than anything. If I said I’d been hungry for just about half my life, it wouldn’t be a lie.

BF: That reminds me of that line from Julia Roberts in Notting Hill: I’ve been on a diet every day since I was nineteen, which basically means I’ve been hungry for a decade.”

KW: Kirk has a hugging gauge and tells me when it’s pasta night. LOL

BF: I need a man like that!!

KW: I do make a mean corn chowder with shrimp and poblano chiles. And my vices are candy coffee drinks at Starbucks. My candy choices are red hots and black licorice. Then hot tamales.

BF: What is the best advice you received from your grandmother?

KW: My Grandma Inez gave me the best advice, which was delivered to me while I was ironing my dress, whilst wearing it. Like you do. Grandma looked at me and giggled and goes, “lazy people work the hardest.”  And over the years it’s resonated with me. Because they do, don’t they?

BF: What’s one of your earliest beauty memories?

KW: My first significant beauty memory was feeling the power of transformation in the chair of a champion hairstylist as she dragged my hair straight with her blow dryer for the first time in my life. Up until then I’d thought I was destined to roam the earth looking very muppet-like for all of my days. Her name was Bronwyn and it was at the JCPenney’s salon.  She changed my life. Thanks for that, Bronwyn.

BF: Shameless plug of Penneys, Kiersten. What beauty faux pas did you commit that you look at now & cringe?

KW: I remember when I was 7, my Mom curled my hair in curlers and I slept in them all night for picture day, I thought I looked so very pretty and while I was being driven to our Christian school I remember making eye contact with all the passing cars. I thought that I might very well be discovered by a huge talent agent looking as pretty as I felt. Terribly funny considering I wasn’t even allowed to see movies in a theater as a child. And yes we were Independent Fundamentalist Baptists…if that explains things a bit.

BF: What would the 13-year-old version of you think about you now?

KW: My 13-year-old self would be sorely impressed with how we turned out. She would think me both wicked and divine. Then we’d try on my expensive shoes and she’d remind me how when we were 14, we snuck out to see a movie and it was The Muppet Movie. And then we’d laugh at our ridiculous rebel selves.

BF: Speaking of girls, what advice would you give to your daughter, Scarlett?

KW: I would advise Scarlett to never compare herself to anyone ever. For it’s in that instant where we siphon off all our power in comparing and contrasting. And it’s at that fetid well that girls first drink of inadequacy and self loathing. Then jealousy steals their joy. Keep your joy from the get-go and compare yourself never, ever, in the history of ever, to anybody else. “You are miraculous.” is what I tell Scarlett.

BF: And I’m crying. That is some wonderful mother stuff, right there! Napkin please. Okay. Nearing the end so finish off that glass. One word that describes you right now:

KW: #merrimentmerchant. It’s kind of one word.

BF: If I could describe you in one word, it would be “effervescent”. Oooh-and I like “enchanting”, as well!

BF: Fill-in-the-blank time:

“My favorite color is…”

KW: My favorite color is YES! Because I love them all. Depending on my mood. But I guess I’m partial to deep greens.

BF: My favorite quote is:

KW: Laugh if you can cry if you must. It’s a favorite quote. Firstly because it’s so applicable, secondly it annoys my husband, so I say it a lot just to be provocative. Now he just laughs whenever he hears it. I actually heard him use it once so I’m certainly the winner in that regard.

BF: My personal philosophy (beauty, life or otherwise) is:

KW: My personal philosophy or way of living life is to “Be a light, shine a light, help hold a light or just go back to your hole.”

BF: Love that! What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?

KW: Very proud of my writing. I’m currently shopping my book “Pocket Stories of a Ramblin’ Christian Gypsy.”

BF: Aaaaaand I’m in! Tell me more.

KW: It’s a deconstructed memoir written in little single consumption reads. Literature for those with an attention span of a caffeinated ferret.  I store my pieces here … http://www.tumblr.com/blog/kierstenwarren   it’s been so nice to unburden myself in the retelling of these stories. Stones I’ve pulled out of my pockets if you will. And am now free to float down the river of life unburdened, free from fetters and fools. I’m proud that as a pregnant fifteen year old I was able to forge ahead and have a successful career in show business. I’m proud of my children and my marriage.

BF: You are a shining example of a mother doing her best for her kids and following her dreams!

BF: What role has been the most fun to play fashion and beauty-wise?

KW: The most fashion fun I’ve had playing a role was probably to play, “Necie” in the Callie Khourie directed and written feature film, Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood.

BF: That is one of my all-time favorite books and films. Brilliant. Details please.

KW: It was vintage and going to sleep with loads of pin curls was more fun than the law should allow.  Pretty dresses just make me happy.

BF: What would you like people to say about you behind your back?

KW: That they wish they were me. I’m kidding. Kinda.

xoxo,
BF

Primping with…actress, advocate wife, mother, (& my dear friend) Sarah Jane Morris

Hi BeautyFrosting readers,

Yesterday my first column, “Primping with…”, was featured on Giuliana Rancic’s fabulous site, FabFitFun!

In “Primping with…”, I’ll be bringing you everything you ever wanted to know about primping with Hollywood celebrities, personalities, and everyday, glamorous ladies just like us!

For my inaugural “Primping with …” column, I couldn’t think of a better person to primp with than one of my best friends, and favorite actresses – Sarah Jane Morris. We met in Dallas 13 years ago, as college students/actresses on a movie set and were fast friends. I always say it was friendship at first sight!
Sarah is a television and film actress best known for her roles as Julia Walker on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters, and most recently as EJ Barrett on CBS’s NCIS. She is also a wife, and a mother to a 2 ½-year-old son.

I chatted with Sarah as she primped for Healthy Child Healthy World’s “Date Night” annual fundraiser for which she was a chairperson.

BF: What’s your favorite color?

SJM: Blue.

BF: Sarah, let’s start with an easy one. Shower or Bath?

SJM: Shower to bathe, bath to relax!

BF: How do you relax or rev-up while primping for a night out?

SJM: Shut the door to my bedroom and enjoy the peace and quiet.

BF: Ha! As a single girl, I sometimes take for granted how cherished that time can be! What are you wearing for the event?

SJM: I’m wearing an LBD (little black dress) I got in Montreal by designer secondhotel, blood-red platform Christian Louboutin heels I got at a consignment store, and a black woven clutch with a gold chain strap.

BF: Any special preparations for the night? Did you do your own hair and makeup or did you call in the experts?

SJM: I went to Dry Bar in West Hollywood to have my hair blown out but ended up throwing it back in a ponytail because it worked better that way with the structured neckline of the dress. And makeup artist Sarah Uslan did my makeup.

Sarah Jane Morris with makeup artist, Sarah Uslan

BF: Well, of course, we’re dying to know what Sarah did to make you even more gorgeous than usual! Spill it, sister.

SJM: She used Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm in Nude, Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation 4.5, Cle de Peau in Beige on top & tapped towards the temples, Dolce & Gabanna Perfect Concealer #1 on the inner corner, and finished with a dusting of Koh Gen Do translucent powder. She perked my cheeks up with Illamasqua Blush in Tremble on apples of the cheeks. To make my eyes pop, she used Armani Eyes To Kill in #9, 15, 16 (with #9 blended on the inner corner, 16 on the lid and 15 in the crease), Dolce & Gabbana The Eyeliner in #5 (rimming the upper and lower lash lines) and Laura Mercier Eyebrow Pencil in Blonde. For my lips, it was my go-to lip routine – Jemma Kid Lip Liner MUS, MAC Hug Me lipstick and Cle de Peau lip gloss. I almost always wear false lashes to events but on a daily basis I love Lancome Hypnose mascara.

BF: Speaking of daily basis, what are your daily beauty staples when you’re getting ready yourself? We love this stuff! No detail is too small.

SJM: Like Sarah used on me for HCHW, I use Cle de Peau concealer in Beige (which you turned me onto for my wedding!), Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer (nude or sand) and/or Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation 4.5, Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, NARS Orgasm blush, Chanel Silky Cheek Colour in Tea Rose, Jemma Kidd Makeup School Perfect Tan Bronzing Trio, Armani Fluid Sheer #4, Jemma Kidd MUS, MAC Hug Me and Cle de Peau gloss. I also wear Epicuren Zinc Oxice SPF 20 under my makeup.

BF: What’s your signature fragrance?

SJM: Stella McCartney eau de parfum or Bliss eau de toilette roll-on (something you gave me, for Christmas).

BF: Do you have a nightly beauty ritual? (As you know, I never miss my bath and book every night!)

SJM: I wish, but no, not really. I’m lucky if my face gets washed! I always brush my teeth, though!

BF: Well, that’s good!!! Brows – wax or tweeze?

SJM: I only tweeze and occasionally I get them tinted (and trimmed and shaped, but not waxed). The tinting mostly just fills them in more when I darken up the little tiny blonde brows, so I don’t have to fill them in with makeup. Looks more natural and frames the face nicely.

BF: What is your go-to everyday hairstyle?

SJM: My go-to everyday hairstyle is either “yesterday’s hair,” a ponytail or a little bun. Goody makes this corkscrew pin that does a perfect stay-put chignon! I switch it up for events, but I often end up with it down with a loose wave.

BF: You’ve always been in such amazing shape! How do you stay fit?

SJM: I’m sort of genetically predisposed to a fit figure, but I’m also a very active person, especially since I have a 2 1/2-year-old son who keeps me busy. I do love pilates, though, and occasionally I need some Kundalini yoga in my life, but generally I just take walks with the family, ride my bike with my son and eat just about everything in moderation.

BF: Ahhh-yes, eating! Since we all have to eat and try to figure out the best way to do that day of eating for you look like?

SJM: I always start my day with a cup of coffee followed by a light breakfast that usually includes fruit, wheat toast or cereal, and sometimes an egg or bacon (I love bacon!). I often need a snack mid-morning (yogurt, nuts, or a Mojo bar) because I don’t eat lunch usually until after I get my son to sleep for his nap. I don’t eat a huge lunch…sandwich, fruit, cucumbers and hummus, or whatever is quick. This often means I need another snack after my son wakes up, so we’ll share some popcorn or fruit or cheese and crackers. For dinner, we tend to do a protein of some sort and a couple of veggies (broccoli, kale chips, corn, potatoes, or whatever else is fresh from the farmer’s market). We don’t do a ton of sweets, but we also don’t usually go to bed without a few bites of ice cream or a little cookie or something!

BF: I did NOT know that you love bacon! How did I not know this? You can take the girl out of Memphis…but you can’t take the Memphis out of the girl. Nor can you take her bacon! Speaking of your hometown, what is the best advice you received from your mother?

SJM: What’s on the inside is what counts. But always wear mascara and lipstick.

BF: I love your mom. Always have. And I love her just a little bit more now! What is the best advice you’ve ever received from anyone?

SJM: “When a door closes, a window opens.” If I’m patient enough, I can usually see the truth in this when I’m bummed about something.

BF: When did you start wearing makeup? Do you feel that was too early, too late or just right?

SJM: I can’t remember the precise age, but I would say probably 8th grade?  I had older sisters, so I would sneak into their makeup and practice and I just gradually started wearing it more and more. I think whatever age it was, it was appropriate. My southern mother wouldn’t let me do anything like that that she didn’t think wasn’t!

BF: Isn’t that the truth?! What’s one of your earliest beauty memories?

SJM: Ha! Well, one of my earliest MEMORIES is sneaking behind my mom’s bed with her little super-sharp sewing scissors and trying to cut my own hair. I had very long, blunt bangs that I thought I would just trim a little off the bottom like the hairdresser did. I got mixed up and cut above my fingers holding the hair instead of below and ended up with a huge hole in the middle of my bangs!

BF: Any beauty blunders you wish you could take back?

SJM: I got a perm in probably the 3rd grade that I thought was so cool because I really thought I looked like I had naturally curly hair. I wish I’d had the sense to realize no one else was buying it because my stick-straight bangs were the only thing natural happening on my head!

BF: What advice would you give to your 13-year-old self?

SJM: Be whoever you want to be. That might mean you try out being different people at different times, but eventually you will find who you really are and are not defined by what you do or who you surround yourself by in life.

BF: What advice would you give to your daughter, if you ever have one?

SJM: Don’t smoke! It makes your skin look bad, makes you feel bad, and will eventually kill you or someone else.

BF: Amen! Word. All that jazz. What are your top 5 beauty products?

SJM: Basic Organics E-Ointment, Epicuren Zinc Oxide Sunscreen, Dermalogica Cream Facial Cleanser, Caudelie Cleansing Water, Lancome Hypnose Mascara.

BF: Almost done! Give me one word that describes you right now?

SJM: Content

BF: Word (there’s my inner hoodrat coming out again). What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Sarah & her husband, rock drummer, Ned Brower at Healthy Child Healthy World "Date Night" event

SJM: My family… I have a wonderful, loving husband and amazing son.

BF: Yeah, you do! As you know, people in Hollywood (heck, people everwhere!) talk. What would you like to hear people say about you behind your back?

SJM: I would like people to say that I am super-confident, charismatic, and kind to everyone!

BF: And, BF & FFF readers, I can assure you that’s just exactly what they say. Thanks Sarah!! Mwah!

Whatcha Wearin’ Wednesday (WWW): Desiree

I love a good birthday party. I have been a big fan of birthdays for as long as I can remember (which means age 2, believe it or not).

So when a friend celebrates a birthday, I will do anything in my power to be there to celebrate. Especially when it’s their 30th birthday AND it’s a new friend who’s just enchanting. Even if it’s raining. And I don’t have an umbrella.

So, now you know what I did on Saturday night!

I walked into Bodega Wine Bar on Sunset, gave the birthday girl, Desiree, a big hug and then…I was amazed by how gorgeous she looked.

The glowing, magnetic Desiree on her 30th birthday

She looked her absolute beautiful best and her makeup was beautiful and flawless. And, well, you know what comes next:

BF: Hey Desiree!

Desiree: I’m so happy you could come!!

BF: Me too. You look soooo gorgeous! You’re just aglow! Can I please get a pic for BeautyFrosting?

Desiree: Sure! Be sure to get my good side! (kidding – she is an actress, after all)

BF (snaps pic): Honey, you couldn’t take a bad picture if you tried! Whatcha’ wearin’?

Desiree's Birthday Makeup Magic

Desiree: HD foundation by Sephora, Mac EyeShadow Sketch and Trax in the the crease, Mac vanilla pigment in the inner eye/lid. Mac Black Track eye liner. Some cheapie fake lashes (I honestly don’t even remember the brand, they were on sale at CVS for $3!) with Lash Grip waterproof adhesive. Origins Gilded Rose blush, and the lipgloss you gave me at YOUR birthday!! Laura Mercier “Bare Beige“. That’s it!

BF: Thanks for the rundown! Wow, you’re an ideal WWW girl! And, see, lip gloss really IS the gift that keeps on giving. Have a beautiful birthday!
